samādhipādaḥ || 1 ||

anena sūtreṇa śāstrasya sambandhābhidheyaprayojanānyākhyāyante | athaśabdo'dhikāradyotako maṅgalārthakaśca | yogo yuktiḥ samādhānam | yuja samādhau [(dhā0 pā0 4|67)]| anuśiṣyate vyākhyāyate lakṣaṇabhedopāyaphalairyena tadanuśāsanam | yogasyānuśāsanaṃ yogānuśāsanam | tadā''śāstraparisamāpteradhikṛtaṃ boddhavyamityarthaḥ | tatra śāstrasya vyutpādyatayā yogaḥ sasādhanaḥ saphalo'bhidheyaḥ | tadvyutpādanaṃ ca phalam | vyutpāditasya yogasya kaivalyaṃ phalam | śāstrābhidheyayoḥ pratipādyapratipādakabhāvalakṣaṇaḥ sambandhaḥ | abhidheyasya tatphalasya ca kaivalyasya sādhyasādhanabhāvaḥ | etaduktaṃ bhavati — vyutpādyasya yogasya sādhanāni śāstreṇa pradarśyante | tatsādhanasiddho yogaḥ kaivalyākhyaṃ phalamutpādayati || 1 ||

tatra ko yoga ityāha —
cittasya nirmalasattvapariṇāmarūpasya yā vṛttayo'ṅgāṅgibhāvapariṇāmarūpāstāsāṃ nirodho bahirmukhatayā pariṇativicchedādantarmukhatayā pratilomapariṇāmena svakāraṇe layo yoga ityākhyāyate | sa ca nirodhaḥ sarvāsāṃ cittabhūmināṃ sarvaprāṇināṃ dharmaḥ kadācit kasyāñcidbhūmavāvirbhavati | tāśca kṣiptaṃ mūḍhaṃ vikṣiptam ekāgraṃ niruddhamiti cittasya bhūmayaścittasyāvasthāviśeṣāḥ | tatra kṣiptaṃ rajasa udrekādasthiraṃ bahirmukhatayā sukhaduḥkhādiviṣayeṣu vikalpiteṣu vyavahiteṣu vā rajasā preritam | tacca sadaiva daityadānavādīnām | mūḍhaṃ tamasa udrekāt kṛtyākṛtyavibhāgamantareṇa krodhādibhirviruddhakṛtyeṣveva niyamitam | tacca sadaiva rakṣaḥpiśācādīnām | vikṣiptaṃ tu sattvodrekādvaiśiṣṭyena parihṛtya duḥkhasādhanaṃ sukhasādhaneṣveva śabdādiṣu pravṛttam | tacca sadaiva devānām | etaduktaṃ bhavati — rajasā pravṛttirūpaṃ tamasā parāpakāraniyataṃ sattvena sukhamayaṃ cittaṃ bhavati | etāstisraścittāvasthāḥ samādhāvanupayoginyaḥ | ekāgraniruddharūpe dve ca sattvotkarṣādyathottaramavasthitattvāt samādhāvupayogaṃ bhajete | sattvādikramavyutkrame tvayamabhiprāyaḥ — dvayorapi rajastamasoratyantaheyatve'pyetadarthaṃ rajasaḥ prathamamupādānam | yāvanna pravṛttirdarśitā tāvannivṛttirna śakyate darśayitumiti dvayorvyatyayena pradarśanam | sattvasya tvetadarthaṃ paścāt pradarśanaṃ yat tasyotkarṣeṇottare dve bhūmī yogopayoginyāviti | anayordvayorekāgraniruddhayorbhūmyoryaścittasyaikāgratārūpaḥ pariṇāmaḥ sa yoga ityuktaṃ bhavati | ekāgre bahirvṛttinirodhaḥ | niruddhe ca sarvāsāṃ vṛttināṃ saṃskārāṇāṃ ca pravilaya ityanayoreva bhūmyoryogasya sambhavaḥ || 2 ||

idānīṃ sūtrakāraścittavṛttinirodhapadāni vyākhyātukāmaḥ prathamaṃ cittapadaṃ vyācaṣṭe —
draṣṭuḥ puruṣasya tasmin kāle svarūpe cinmātratāyāmavasthānaṃ sthitirbhavati | ayamarthaḥ — utpannavivekakhyāteścitsaṃkramābhāvāt kartṛtvābhimānanivṛttau procchannapariṇāmāyāṃ buddhāvātmanaḥ svarūpeṇāvasthānaṃ sthitirbhavati || 3 ||

vyutthānadaśāyāṃ tu tasya kiṃ rūpamityāha —
itaratra yogādanyasmin kāle vṛttayo yā vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇāstābhiḥ sārūpyaṃ tadrūpatvam | ayamarthaḥ — yādṛśyo vṛttayaḥ sukhaduḥkhamohātmikāḥ prādurbhavanti tādṛgrūpa eva saṃvedyate vyavahartṛbhiḥ puruṣaḥ | tadevaṃ yasminnekāgratayā pariṇate citiśakteḥ svasmin rūpe pratiṣṭhānaṃ bhavati yasmiṃścendriyavṛttidvāreṇa viṣayākāreṇa pariṇate puruṣastadrūpākāra iva paribhāvyate | yathā jalataraṅgeṣu calatsu candraścalanniva pratibhāṣate taccittam || 4 ||

vṛttipadaṃ vyākhyātumāha —
vṛttayaścittapariṇāmaviśeṣāḥ | vṛttisamudāyalakṣaṇasyā'vayavino yā'vayavabhūtā vṛttayastadapekṣayā tayappratyayaḥ (aṣṭā0 5|2|42)| etaduktaṃ bhavati — pañca vṛttayaḥ kīdṛśyaḥ | kliṣṭā akliṣṭāḥ | kleśairvakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇairākrāntāḥ kliṣṭāḥ | tadviparītā akliṣṭāḥ || 5 ||

etā eva pañca vṛttayaḥ saṅkṣipya uddiśyante —
āsāṃ krameṇa lakṣaṇamāha — || 6 ||

atrātiprasiddhatvāt pramāṇānāṃ śāstrakāreṇa bhedanirūpaṇenaiva gatatvāllakṣaṇasya pṛthak lakṣaṇaṃ na kṛtam | pramāṇalakṣaṇantu — avisaṃvādi jñānaṃ pramāṇamiti | indriyadvāreṇa bāhyavastūparāgāccittasya tadviṣayasāmānyaviśeṣātmano'rthasya viśeṣāvadhāraṇapradhānā vṛttiḥ pratyakṣam | gṛhītasambandhālliṅgālliṅgini sāmānyādhyavasāyo'numānam | āptavacanamāgamaḥ || 7 ||

evaṃ pramāṇarūpāṃ vṛttiṃ vyākhyāya viparyayarūpāmāha —
atathābhūte'rthe tathotpadyamānaṃ jñānaṃ viparyayaḥ | yathā śuktikāyāṃ rajatajñānam | atadrūpapratiṣṭhamiti | tasyārthasya yadrūpaṃ tasmin rūpe na pratiṣṭhati tasyārthasya yat pāramārthikaṃ rūpaṃ na tat pratibhāsayatīti yāvat | saṃśayo'pyatadrūpapratiṣṭhitatvānmithyājñānam | yathā sthāṇurvā puruṣo veti || 8 ||

vikalpavṛttiṃ vyākhātumāha —
śabdajanitaṃ jñānaṃ śabdajñānaṃ | tadanupatituṃ śīlaṃ yasya saḥ śabdajñānānupātī | vastunastathātvamanapekṣamāṇo yo'dhyavasāyaḥ sa vikalpa ityucyate | yathā puruṣasya caitanyaṃ svarūpamiti | atra devadattasya kambala iti śabdajanite jñāne ṣaṣṭhyā yo'dhyavasito bhedastamihāvidyamānamapi samāropya pravartate'dhyavasāyaḥ | vastutastu caitanyameva puruṣaḥ || 9 ||

nidrāṃ vyākhyātumāha —
abhāvapratyaya ālambanaṃ yasyāḥ sā tathoktā | etaduktaṃ bhavati — yā santatamudriktatvāttamasaḥ samastaviṣayaparityāgena pravartate vṛttiḥ sā nidrā | tasyāśca sukhamahamasvāpsamiti smṛtidarśanāt smṛteścānubhavavyatirekeṇānupapattervṛttittvam || 10 ||

smṛtiṃ vyākhyātumāha —
pramāṇenānubhūtasya viṣayasya yo'yamasampramoṣaḥ saṃskāradvāreṇa buddhāvārohaḥ sā smṛtiḥ | tatra pramāṇaviparyayavikalpā jāgradavasthāḥ | tā eva tadanubhavabalāt prakṣīyamāṇāḥ svapnaḥ [pā0 pratyakṣāyamāṇāḥ svapnāḥ]| nidrā tvasaṃvedyamānaviṣayā | smṛtiśca pramāṇaviparyayavikalpanidrānimittaḥ || 11 ||

evaṃ vṛttīrvyākhyāya sopāyaṃ nirodhaṃ vyākhyātumāha —
abhyāsavairāgye vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇe tābhyāṃ prakāśapravṛttiniyamarūpā yā vṛttayastāsāṃ nirodho bhavatītyuktaṃ bhavati | tāsāṃ vinivṛttabāhyābhiniveśānāmantarmukhatayā svakāraṇa eva citte śaktirūpatayā'vasthānam | tatra viṣayadoṣadarśanajena vairāgyeṇa tadvaimukhyamutpādyate | abhyāsena ca sukhajanakaṃ śāntapravāhapradarśanadvāreṇa dṛḍhasthairyamutpādyate | itthaṃ tābhyāṃ bhavati cittavṛttinirodhaḥ || 12 ||

abhyāsaṃ vyākhyātumāha —
vṛttirahitasya cittasya svarūpaniṣṭhaḥ pariṇāmaḥ sthitistasyāṃ yatna utsāhaḥ punaḥpunastathātvena cetasi niveśanamabhyāsa ityucyate || 13 ||

tasyaiva viśeṣamāha —
bahukālaṃ nairantaryeṇādarātiśayena ca sevyamāno dṛḍhabhūmiḥ sthiro bhavati | dārḍhyāya prabhavatītyarthaḥ || 14 ||

vairāgyasya lakṣaṇamāha —
dvividho hi viṣayo dṛṣṭa ānuśravikaśca | dṛṣṭa ihaivopalabhyamānaḥ śabdādiḥ | devalokādāvānuśravikaḥ | anuśrūyate gurumukhādityanuśravo vedastata āgata ānuśravikaḥ | tayordvayorapi viṣayayoḥ pariṇāmavirasatvadarśanādvigatagardhasya yā vaśīkārasaṃjñā mamaite vaśyā nāhameteṣāṃ vaśya iti yo'yaṃ vimarśastadvairāgyamucyate || 15 ||

tasyaiva viśeṣamāha —
tadvairāgyaṃ paraṃ prakṛṣṭaṃ prathamaṃ vairāgyaṃ viṣayaviṣayaṃ dvitīyaṃ guṇaviṣayamutpannaguṇapuruṣavivekakhyātereva bhavati | nirodhasamādheratyantānukūlatvāt || 16 ||

evaṃ yogasya svarūpamuktvā samprajñātasvarūpabhedamāha —
samādhiriti śeṣaḥ | samyak saṃśayaviparyayarahitatvena prajñāyate prakarṣeṇa jñāyate bhāvyasya rūpaṃ yena sa samprajñātaḥ samādhirbhāvanāviśeṣaḥ | sa vitarkādibhedāccaturvidhaḥ — savitarkaḥ savicāraḥ sānandaḥ sāsmitaśca | bhāvanā bhāvyasya viṣayāntaraparihāreṇa cetasi punaḥpunarniveśanam | bhāvyaṃ ca dvividham — īśvarastattvāni ca | tānyapi dvividhāni jaḍājaḍabhedāt | jaḍāni caturviṃśatiḥ | ajaḍaḥ puruṣaḥ | tatra yadā mahābhūtānīndriyāṇi sthūlāni viṣayatvenādāya pūrvāparānusandhānena śabdārthollekhasambhedena ca bhāvanā kriyate tadā savitarkaḥ samādhiḥ | asminnevāvalambane pūrvāparānusandhānaśabdollekhaśūnyatvena yadā bhāvanā pravartate tadā nirvitarkaḥ | tanmātrāntaḥkaraṇalakṣaṇaṃ sūkṣmaviṣayamālambya tasya deśakāladharmāvacchedena yadā bhāvanā tadā savicāraḥ | tasminnevāvalambane deśakāladharmāvacchedaṃ vinā dharmimātrāvabhāsitvena bhāvanā kriyamāṇā nirvicāra ityucyate | evaṃparyantaḥ samādhiḥ grāhyasamāpattiriti vyapadiśyate | yadā tu rajastamoleśānuviddhamantaḥkaraṇasattvaṃ bhāvyate tadā guṇabhāvāccitiśakteḥ sukhaprakāśamayasya sattvasya bhāvyamānasyodrekāt sānandaḥ samādhirbhavati | tasminneva samādhau ye baddhadhṛtayastattvāntaraṃ pradhānapuruṣarūpaṃ na paśyanti te vigatadehāhaṃkāratvādvidehaśabdavācyāḥ | iyaṃ grahaṇasamāpattiḥ | tataḥ paraṃ rajastamoleśānabhibhūtaśuddhasattvamālambanīkṛtya yā pravartate bhāvanā tasyāṃ grāhyasya nyagbhāvāccitiśakterudrekāt sattāmātrāvaśeṣatvena samādhiḥ sāsmita ityucyate | na cāhaṃkārāsmitayorabhedaḥ śaṅkanīyaḥ | yato yatrāntaḥkaraṇamahamiti ullekhena viṣayān vedayate so'haṃkāraḥ | yatrāntarmukhatayā pratilomapariṇāme prakṛtilīne cetasi sattāmātramavabhāti sā'smitā | asminneva samādhau ye kṛtaparitoṣāḥ paraṃ paramātmānaṃ puruṣaṃ na paśyanti teṣāṃ cetasi svakāraṇe layamupāgate prakṛtilayā ityucyante | ye paraṃ puruṣaṃ jñātvā bhāvanāyāṃ pravartante teṣāmiyaṃ vivekakhyātirgrahītṛsamāpattirityucyate | tatra samprajñāte samādhau catasro'vasthāḥ śaktirūpatayā'vatiṣṭhante | tatraikaikasyāstyāga uttarottareti caturavastho'yaṃ samprajñātaḥ samādhiḥ || 17 ||

asamprajñātamāha —
viramyate'neneti virāmo vitarkādicintātyāgaḥ | virāmaścāsau pratyayaśceti virāmapratyayaḥ | tasyābhyāsaḥ paunaḥpunyena cetasi niveśanam | tatra yā kācidvṛttirullasati tasyā neti netīti nairantaryeṇa paryudasanaṃ virāmapratyayābhyāsaḥ | tatpūrvaḥ samprajñātasamādhiḥ | saṃskāraśeṣo'nyastadvilakṣaṇo'yamasamprajñāta ityarthaḥ | na tatra kiñcidvedyam | asamprajñāto nirbījaḥ samādhiḥ | iha caturvidhaścittasya pariṇāmaḥ — vyutthānaṃ samādhiprārambha ekāgratā nirodhaśca | tatra kṣiptamūḍhe cittabhūmī vyutthānam | vikṣiptā bhūmiḥ satvodrekāt samādhiprārambhaḥ | niruddhaikāgrate ca paryantabhūmī | pratipariṇāmaṃ ca saṃskārāḥ | tatra vyutthānajanitāḥ saṃskārāḥ samādhiprārambhajaiḥ saṃskāraiḥ pratyāhanyante | tajjāścaikāgratājaiḥ | nirodhajanitairekāgratājā nirodhajāḥ saṃskārāḥ svarūpaṃ ca hanyante | yathā suvarṇasaṃvalitaṃ dhmāyamānaṃ sīsakamātmānaṃ suvarṇamalaṃ ca nirdahati | evamekāgratājanitān saṃskārān nirodhajāḥ svātmānaṃ ca nirdahanti || 18 ||

tadevaṃ yogasya svarūpaṃ bhedaṃ ca saṃkṣepeṇopāyāṃścābhidhāya vistārarūpeṇopāyaṃ yogābhyāsapradarśanapūrvakamupakramate —
videhāḥ prakṛtilayāśca vitarkādibhūmikāsūtre (1|17) vyākhyātāḥ | teṣāṃ samādhirbhavapratyayaḥ | bhavaḥ saṃsāraḥ sa eva pratyayaḥ kāraṇaṃ yasya sa bhavapratyayaḥ | ayamarthaḥ — ādhimātrāntarbhūtā eva te saṃsāre [āvirbhūtā eva saṃsāre te] tathāvidhasamādhibhājo bhavanti | teṣāṃ paratattvā'darśanādyogābhāso'yam | ataḥ paratattvajñāne tadbhāvanāyāṃ ca muktikāmena mahān yatno vidheya ityetadarthamupadiṣṭam || 19 ||

tadanyeṣāntu —
videhaprakṛtilayavyatiriktānāṃ śraddhādipūrvakaḥ śraddhādayaḥ pūrve upāyā yasya sa śraddhādipūrvakaḥ | te ca śraddhādayaḥ kramādupāyopeyabhāvena pravartamānāḥ samprajñātasamādherupāyatāṃ pratipadyante | tatra śraddhā yogaviṣaye cetasaḥ prasādaḥ | vīryamutsāhaḥ | smṛtiranubhūtāsampramoṣaḥ | samādhirekāgratā | prajñā prajñātavyavivekaḥ | tatra śraddhāvato vīryaṃ jāyate yogaviṣaya utsāhavān bhavati | sotsāhasya ca pāścātyāsu bhūmiṣu smṛtirutpadyate | tatsmaraṇācca cetaḥ samādhīyate | samāhitacittaśca bhāvyaṃ samyagvivekena jānāti | ta ete samprajñātasya samādherupāyāstasyābhyāsāt parācca vairāgyādbhavatyasamprajñātaḥ || 20 ||

uktopāyavatāṃ yogināmupāyabhedādbhedānāha —
samādhilābha iti śeṣaḥ | saṃvegaḥ kriyāheturdṛḍhataraḥ saṃskāraḥ | sa tīvro yeṣāmadhimātropāyānāṃ teṣāmāsannaḥ samādhilābhaḥ samādhiphalaṃ cāsannaṃ bhavati | śīghrameva sampadyata ityarthaḥ || 21 ||

ke te tīvrasaṃvegā ityāha —
tebhya upāyebhyo mṛdvādibhedabhinnebhya upāyavatāṃ viśeṣo bhavati | mṛdurmadhyo'dhimātra ityupāyabhedāḥ | te pratyekaṃ mṛdusaṃvegamadhyasaṃvegatīvrasaṃvegabhedāt tridhā | tadbhedena ca nava yogino bhavanti — mṛdūpāyo mṛdusaṃvego madhyasaṃvegastīvrasaṃvegaśca | madhyopāyo mṛdusaṃvego madhyasaṃvegastīvrasaṃvegaśca | adhimātropāyo mṛdusaṃvego madhyasaṃvegastīvrasaṃvegaśca | adhimātra upāye tīvre saṃvege ca mahān yatnaḥ kartavya iti bhedopadeśaḥ || 22 ||

idānīmetadupāyavilakṣaṇaṃ sugamamupāyāntaraṃ darśayitumāha —
īśvaro vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇaḥ | tatra praṇidhānaṃ bhaktiviśeṣo viśiṣṭamupāsanaṃ sarvakriyāṇāṃ tatrārpaṇam | viṣayasukhādikaṃ phalamanicchan sarvāḥ kriyāstasmin paramagurāvarpayati | tatpraṇidhānaṃ samādhestatphalalābhasya ca prakṛṣṭa upāyaḥ || 23 ||

īśvarasya praṇidhānāt samādhilābha ityuktam | tatreśvarasya svarūpaṃ pramāṇaṃ prabhāvaṃ vācakamupāsanākramaṃ tatphalaṃ ca krameṇa vaktumāha —
kliśnantīti kleśā avidyādayo vakṣyamāṇāḥ | vihitaniṣiddhavyāmiśrarūpāṇi karmāṇi | vipacyanta iti vipākāḥ karmaphalāni jātyāyurbhogāḥ | āphalavipākāccittabhūmau śerata ityāśayo vāsanākhyasaṃskāraḥ | tairaparāmṛṣṭastriṣvapi kāleṣu na saṃspṛṣṭaḥ | puruṣaviśeṣo'nyebhyaḥ puruṣebhyo viśiṣyate iti viśeṣa īśvaraḥ īśanaśīla icchāmātreṇa sakalajagaduddharaṇakṣamaḥ | yadyapi sarveṣāmātmaṇāṃ kleśādisparśo nāsti tathāpi cittagatāsteṣāmupadiśyante | yathā yoddhṛgato jayaparājayau svāminaḥ | asya tu triṣvapi kāleṣu tathāvidho'pi kleśādiparāmarśo nāsti | ataḥ savilakṣaṇa eva bhagavānīśvaraḥ | tasya ca tathāvidhamaiśvaryamanādeḥ sattvotkarṣāt | tasya sattvotkarṣasya prakṛṣṭājjñānādeva | na cānayorjñānaiśvaryayoritaretarāśrayatvaṃ parasparānapekṣatvāt | te dve jñānaiśvarye īśvarasattve vartamāne anādibhūte tena tathāvidhena sattvena tasyānādireva sambandhaḥ | prakṛtipuruṣasaṃyogaviyogayorīśvarecchāvyatirekeṇānupapatteḥ | yathetareṣāṃ prāṇināṃ sukhaduḥkhamohātmakatayā pariṇataṃ cittaṃ nirmale sāttvike dharmānuprakhye pratisaṅkrāntaṃ cicchāyāsaṃkrānte saṃvedyaṃ bhavati naivamīśvarasya | tasya kevala eva sāttvikaḥ pariṇāma utkarṣavānanādisambandhena bhogyatayā vyavasthitaḥ | ataḥ puruṣāntaravilakṣaṇatayā sa eva īśvaraḥ | muktātmanāntu punaḥpunaḥ kleśādiyogastaistaiḥ śāstroktairupāyairnivartitaḥ | asya punaḥ sarvadaiva tathāvidhatvānna muktātmatulyatvam | na ceśvarāṇāmanekatvam | teṣāṃ tulyatve bhinnābhiprāyatvāt kāryasyaivānupapatteḥ | utkarṣāpakarṣayuktatve ya evotkṛṣṭaḥ sa eveśvarastatraiva kāṣṭhāprāptatvādaiśvaryasya || 24 ||

evamīśvarasya svarūpamabhidhāya pramāṇamāha —
tasmin bhagavati sarvajñatvasya yadbījamatītānāgatādigrahaṇasyālpatvaṃ mahatvaṃ ca mūlatvādbījamiva bījam | tat tatra niratiśayaṃ kāṣṭhāṃ prāptam | dṛṣṭā hyalpatvamahatvādīnāṃ dharmāṇāṃ sātiśayānāṃ kāṣṭhāprāptiḥ | yathā paramāṇāvalpatvasyākāśe paramamahatvasya | evaṃ jñānādayo'pi cittadharmāstāratamyena paridṛśyamānāḥ kvacinniratiśayatāmāsādayanti | yatra caite niratiśayāḥ sa īśvaraḥ | yadyapi sāmānyamātre'numānasya paryavasitatvānna viśeṣāvagatiḥ sambhavati tathāpi śāstrādasya sarvajñatvādayo viśeṣā avagantavyāḥ | tasya svaprayojanābhāve kathaṃ prakṛtipuruṣayoḥ saṃyogaviyogāvāpādayatīti nā''śaṅkanīyaṃ tasya kāruṇikatvādbhūtānugraha eva prayojanam | kalpapralayamahāpralayeṣu niḥśeṣān saṃsāriṇa uddhariṣyāmīti tasyādhyavasāyaḥ | yadyasyeṣṭaṃ tattasya prayojanamiti || 25 ||

evamīśvarasya pramāṇamabhidhāya prabhāvamāha —
ādyānāṃ sraṣṭṝṇāṃ brahmādīnāmapi sa gururupadeṣṭā yataḥ sa kālena nāvacchidyate'nāditvāt | teṣāṃ brahmādīnāṃ punarādimattvādasti kālenāvacchedaḥ || 26 ||

evaṃ prabhāvamuktvopāsanopayogāya vācakamāha —
itthamuktasvarūpasyeśvarasya vācako'bhidhāyakaḥ prakarṣeṇa nūyate stūyate'neneti nauti stautīti vā praṇava oṃkāraḥ | tayośca vācyavācakalakṣaṇaḥ sambandho nityaḥ saṃketena prakāśyate na tu kenacit kriyate | yathā pitāputrayorvidyamāna eva sambandho'syāyaṃ pitā'syāyaṃ putra iti kenacit prakāśyate || 27 ||

upāsanamāha —
tasya sārdhatrimātrikasya praṇavasya japo yathāvaduccāraṇaṃ tadvācyasya ceśvarasya bhāvanaṃ punaḥpunaścetasi niveśanamekāgratāyā upāyaḥ | ataḥ samādhisiddhaye yoginā praṇavo japyastadartha īśvaraśca bhāvanīya ityuktaṃ bhavati || 28 ||

upāsanāyāḥ phalamāha —
tasmājjapāttadarthabhāvanāyāśca yoginaḥ pratyakcetanā'dhigamo bhavati | viṣayaprātikūlyena svāntaḥkaraṇābhimukhamañcati yā cetanā dṛkśaktiḥ sā pratyakcetanā tadadhigamo jñānaṃ bhavatītyarthaḥ | antarāyā vakṣyamāṇāḥ | teṣāmabhāvaḥ śaktipratibandho'pi bhavati || 29 ||

atha ke'ntarāyā ityāśaṅkāyāmāha —
navaite rajastamobalāt pravartamānāścittasya vikṣepā bhavanti | tairekāgratāvirodhibhiścittaṃ vikṣipyata ityarthaḥ | tatra vyādhirdhātuvaiṣamyanimitto jvarādiḥ | styānamakarmaṇyatā cittasya | ubhayakoṭyālambanaṃ jñānaṃ saṃśayaḥ — yogaḥ sādhyo na veti | pramādo'navadhānatā samādhisādhaneṣvaudāsīnyam | ālasyaṃ kāyacittayorgurutvaṃ yogaviṣaye pravṛttyabhāvahetuḥ | aviratiścittasya viṣayasamprayogātmā gardhaḥ | bhrāntidarśanaṃ śuktikāyāṃ rajatavadviparyayajñānam | alabdhabhūmikatvaṃ kutaścinnimittāt samādhibhūmeralābho'samprāptiḥ | anavasthitattvaṃ labdhāyāmapi bhūmau cittasya tatrāpratiṣṭhā | ta ete samādherekāgratāyā yathāyogaṃ pratipakṣatvādantarāyā ityucyate || 30 ||

cittavikṣepakārakānanyānapyantarāyān pratipādayitumāha —
kutaścinnimittādutpanneṣu vikṣepeṣu ete duḥkhādayaḥ pravartante | tatra duḥkhaṃ cittasya rajasaḥ pariṇāmo bādhanālakṣaṇo yadbādhāt prāṇinastadupaghātāya pravartante | daurmanasyaṃ bāhyābhyantaraiḥ kāraṇairmanaso dauḥsthyam | aṅgamejayatvaṃ sarvāṅgīno vepathurāsanamanaḥsthairyasya bādhakaḥ | prāṇo yadbāhyaṃ vāyumācāmati sa śvāsaḥ, yat kauṣṭhyaṃ vāyuṃ niḥśvasiti sa praśvāsaḥ | ete vikṣepaiḥ saha pravartamānā yathoditābhyāsavairāgyābhyāṃ niroddhavyā ityeṣāmupadeśaḥ || 31 ||

sopadravavikṣepapratiṣedhārthamupāyāntaramāha —
teṣāṃ vikṣepāṇāṃ pratiṣedhārthamekasmin kasmiṃścidabhimate tattve'bhyāsaścetasaḥ punaḥpunarniveśanaṃ kāryaḥ | yadbalāt pratyuditāyāmekāgratāyāṃ te vikṣepāḥ praṇāśamupayānti || 32 ||

idānīṃ cittasaṃskārāpādakaparikarmakathanamupāyāntaramāha —
maitrī sauhārdam | karuṇā kṛpā | muditā harṣaḥ | upekṣaudāsīnyam | etā yathākramaṃ sukhiteṣu duḥkhiteṣu puṇyavatsvapuṇyavatsu ca vibhāvayet | tathāhi — sukhiteṣu sādhuṣu eṣāṃ sukhitvamiti maitrīṃ kuryānna tu īrṣyām | duḥkhiteṣu kathaṃ nu nāmaiṣāṃ duḥkhanivṛttiḥ syāditi kṛpāmeva kuryānna tāṭasthyam | puṇyavatsu puṇyānumodanena harṣameva kuryānna tu kimete puṇyavanta iti vidveṣam | apuṇyavatsu caudāsīnyameva bhāvayennānumodanaṃ na vā dveṣam | sūtre sukhaduḥkhādiśabdaistadvantaḥ pratipāditāḥ | tadevaṃ maitryādiparikarmaṇā citte prasīdati sukhena samādherāvirbhāvo bhavati | parikarma caitadbāhyaṃ karma | yathā gaṇite miśrakādivyavahāro gaṇitaniṣpattaye saṃkalitādikarmopakārakatvena pradhānakarmaniṣpattaye bhavatyevaṃ dveṣarāgādipratipakṣabhūtamaitryādibhāvanayā samutpāditaprasādaṃ cittaṃ samprajñātādisamādhiyogyaṃ sampadyate | rāgadveṣāveva mukhyatayā vikṣepamutpādayataḥ | tau cet samūlamunmūlitau syātāṃ tadā prasannatvānmanaso bhavatyekāgratā || 33 ||

upāyāntaramāha —
pracchardanaṃ kauṣṭyasya vāyoḥ prayatnaviśeṣānmātrāpramāṇena bahirniḥsāraṇam | mātrāpramāṇenaiva prāṇasya vāyorbahirgativicchedo vidhāraṇā | sā ca dvābhyāṃ prakārābhyāṃ bāhyasyābhyantarāpūraṇena pūritasya vā tatraiva nirodhena | tadevaṃ recakapūrakakumbhakastrividhaḥ prāṇāyāmaścittasya sthitimekāgratāyāṃ nibadhnāti sarvāsāmindriyavṛttīnāṃ prāṇavṛttipūrvakatvāt | manaḥprāṇayośca svavyāpāraparasparamekayogakṣematvājjīyamāṇaḥ prāṇaḥ samastendriyavṛttinirodhadvāreṇa cittasyaikāgratāyāṃ prabhavati | samastadoṣakṣayakāritvaṃ cāsyāgame śrūyate | doṣakṛtāśca sarvā vikṣepavṛttayaḥ | ato doṣanirharaṇadvāreṇāpyasyaikāgratāyāṃ sāmarthyam || 34 ||

idānimupāyāntarapradarśanopakṣepeṇa samprajñātasya samādheḥ pūrvāṅgaṃ kathayati —
manasa iti vākyaśeṣaḥ | viṣayā gandharasarūpasparśaśabdāste vidyante phalatvena yasyāḥ sā viṣayavatī pravṛttirmanasaḥ sthairyaṃ karoti | tathāhi nāsāgre cittaṃ dhārayato divyagandhasaṃvidupajāyate | tādṛśya eva jihvāgre rasasaṃbit | tālvagre rūpasaṃvit | jihvāmadhye sparśasaṃvit | jihvāmūle śabdasaṃvit | tadevaṃ tattadindriyadvāreṇa tasmiṃstasminviṣaye divye jāyamānā saṃviccittasyaikāgratāyā heturbhavati | asti yogasya phalamiti yoginaḥ samāśvāsotpādanāt || 35 ||

evamvidhamevopāyāntaramāha —
pravṛttirutpannā cittasya sthitinibandhinīti vākyaśeṣaḥ | jyotiḥśabdena sāttvikaḥ prakāśa ucyate | sa praśasto bhūyānatiśayavāṃśca vidyate yasyāḥ sā jyotiṣmatī pravṛttiḥ | viśokā vigataḥ sukhamayasattvābhyāsavaśācchoko rajaḥpariṇāmo yasyāḥ sā viśokā cetasaḥ sthitinibandhinī | ayamarthaḥ — hṛtpadmasampūṭamadhye praśāntakallolakṣīrodadhiprakhyaṃ cittasya sattvaṃ bhāvayataḥ prajñālokāt sarvavṛttikṣaye cetasaḥ sthairyamutpadyate || 36 ||

upāyāntarapradarśanadvāreṇa samprajñātasamādherviṣayaṃ darśayati —
manasaḥ sthitinibandhanaṃ bhavatīti śeṣaḥ | vītarāgaḥ parityaktaviṣayābhilāṣastasya yaccittaṃ parihṛtakleśaṃ tadālambanīkṛtaṃ cetasaḥ sthitiheturbhavati || 37 ||

evaṃvidhamupāyāntaramāha —
pratyastamitabāhyendriyavṛttermanomātreṇaiva yatra bhoktṛtvamātmanaḥ sa svapnaḥ | nidrā pūrvoktalakṣaṇā | tadālambanaṃ svapnālambanaṃ nidrālambanaṃ vā jñānamālambyamānaṃ cetasaḥ sthitiṃ karoti || 38 ||

nānārucitvāt prāṇināṃ yasmin kasmiṃścidvastuni yoginaḥ śraddhā bhavati | tasya dhyānenāpīṣṭasiddhiriti pratipādayitumāha —
yathābhiprete vastuni bāhye candrādāvabhyantare nāḍicakrādau vā bhāvyamāne cetaḥ sthirībhavati || 39 ||

evamupāyān pradarśya phaladarśanāyāha —
ebhirupāyaiścittasya sthairyaṃ bhāvayato yoginaḥ sūkṣmaviṣayabhāvanādvāreṇa paramāṇvanto vaśīkāro'pratighātarūpo jāyate | na kvacit paramāṇuparyante sūkṣme viṣaye'sya manaḥ pratihanyate ityarthaḥ | evaṃ sthūlamākāśādiparamamahatvaparyantaṃ bhāvayato na kvaciccetasaḥ pratighāta utpadyate sarvatra svātantryaṃ bhavatītyarthaḥ || 40 ||

evamebhirupāyaiḥ saṃskṛtasya cetasaḥ kīdṛgrūpaṃ bhavatītyāha —
kṣīṇā vṛttayo yasya sa kṣīṇavṛttistasya grahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣvātmendriyaviṣayeṣu tatsthatadañjanatā samāpattirbhavati | tatsthatvaṃ tatraikāgratā | tadañjanatā tanmayatvam | kṣīṇabhūte citte viṣayasya bhāvyamānasyaivotkarṣaḥ | tathāvidhā samāpattistadrūpaḥ pariṇāmo bhavatītyarthaḥ | dṛṣṭāntamāhā'bhijātasyeva maṇeriti | yathā'bhijātasya nirmalasphaṭikamaṇestattadupādhivaśāt tattadrūpāpattirevaṃ nirmalasya cittasya tattadbhāvanīyavastūparāgāttattadrūpāpattiḥ | yadyapi grahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu ityuktaṃ tathāpi bhūmikākramavaśādgrāhyagrahaṇagrahītṛṣu iti bodhyam | yataḥ prathamaṃ grāhyaniṣṭha eva samādhistato grahaṇaniṣṭhastato'smitāmātrarūpo grahītṛniṣṭhaḥ kevalasya puruṣasya grahīturbhāvyatvāsambhavāt | tataśca sthūlasūkṣmagrāhyoparaktaṃ cittaṃ tatra samāpannaṃ bhavati | evaṃ grahaṇe grahītari ca samāpannaṃ bodhyavyam || 41 ||

idānīmuktāyā eva samāpatteścāturvidhyamāha —
śrotrendiyagrāhyaḥ sphoṭarūpo vā śabdaḥ | artho jātyādiḥ | jñānaṃ sattvapradhānā buddhivṛttiḥ | vikalpa uktalakṣaṇaḥ | taiḥ saṃkīrṇāḥ | yasyāmete śabdādayastrayaḥ parasparādhyāsena vikalparūpeṇa pratibhāsante gauriti śabdo gaurityartho gauriti jñānamityanenākāreṇa sā savitarkā samāpattirucyate || 42 ||

uktalakṣaṇaviparītāṃ nirvitarkāmāha —
śabdārthasmṛtipravilaye sati pratyuditaspaṣṭagrāhyākārapratibhāsatayā nyagbhūtajñānāṃśatvena svarūpaśūnyeva nirvitarkā samāpattiḥ || 43 ||

bhedāntaraṃ pratipādayitumāha —
etayaiva savitarkayā nirvitarkayā ca samāpatyā savicārā nirvicārā ca vyākhyātā | kīdṛśī | sūkṣmaviṣayā sūkṣmastanmātrendriyādirviṣayo yasyāḥ sā tathoktā | etena pūrvasyāḥ sthūlaviṣayatvaṃ pratipāditaṃ bhavati | sā hi mahābhūtendriyālambanā | śabdārthaviṣayatvena śabdārthavikalpasahitatvena deśakāladharmādyavacchinnaḥ sūkṣmo'rthaḥ pratibhāti yasyāṃ sā savicārā | deśakāladharmādirahito dharmimātratayā sūkṣmārthastanmātrendriyarūpaḥ pratibhāti yasyāṃ sā nirvicārā || 44 ||

asyā eva sūkṣmaviṣayāyāḥ kimparyantaḥ sūkṣmaviṣaya ityāha —
savicāranirvicārayoḥ samāpattyoryat sūkṣmaviṣayatvamuktaṃ tadaliṅgaparyavasānam | na kvacillīyate na vā kiñcilliṅgati gamayatītyaliṅgaṃ pradhānam | tatparyantaṃ sūkṣmaviṣayatvam | tathāhi — guṇānāṃ pariṇāme catvāri parvāṇi — viśiṣṭaliṅgamaviśiṣṭaliṅgaṃ liṅgamātramaliṅgaṃ ceti | viśiṣṭaliṅgaṃ bhūtendriyāṇi | aviśiṣṭaliṅgāṃ tanmātrāntaḥkaraṇāni | liṅgamātraṃ buddhiḥ | aliṅgam pradhānamiti | nātaḥ paraṃ sūkṣmamastītyuktaṃ bhavati || 45 ||

etāsāṃ samāpattīnāṃ prakṛte prayojanamāha —
tā evoktalakṣanāḥ samāpattayaḥ sabījaḥ saha bījenālambanena vartata iti sabījaḥ samprajñātaḥ samādhirucyate sarvāsāṃ sālambanatvāt || 46 ||

athetarāsāṃ samāpattīnāṃ nirvicāraphalatvānnirvicārāyāḥ phalamāha —
nirvicāratvaṃ vyākhyātam (1|44)| vaiśāradyaṃ nairmalyam | savitarkāṃ sthūlaviṣayāmapekṣya nirvitarkāyāḥ prādhānyam | tato'pi sūkṣmaviṣayāyāḥ savicārāyāḥ | tato'pi nirvicārāyāḥ | tasyāstu nirvikalparūpāyāḥ prakṛṣṭābhyāsavaśādvaiśāradye nairmalye satyadhyātmaprasādaḥ samupajāyate | cittaṃ kleśavāsanārahitaṃ sthitipravāhayogyaṃ bhavati | etadeva cittasya vaiśāradyaṃ yat sthitau dārḍhyam || 47 ||

tasmin sati kiṃ bhavatītyāha —
ṛtaṃ satyaṃ vibharti kadācidapi na viparyayeṇācchādyate sā ṛtambharā prajñā tasmin bhavatītyarthaḥ | tasmācca prajñālokāt sarvaṃ yathāvat paśyan yogī prakṛṣṭaṃ yogaṃ prāpnoti || 48 ||

asyāḥ prajñāntarādvailakṣaṇyamāha —
śrutamāgamajñānam | anumānamuktalakṣaṇam (1|7)| tābhyāṃ yā jāyate prajñā sā sāmānyaviṣayā | na hi śabdaliṅgayorindriyavadviśeṣapratipattau sāmarthyam | iyaṃ punaḥ nirvicāravaiśāradyasamudbhavā prajñā tābhyāṃ vilakṣaṇā viśeṣaviṣayatvāt | asyāṃ hi prajñāyāṃ sūkṣmavyavahitaviprakṛṣṭānāmapi viśeṣaḥ sphuṭenaiva rūpeṇa bhāsate | atastasyāmeva yoginā paraḥ prayatnaḥ kartavya ityupadiṣṭaṃ bhavati || 49 ||

asyāḥ prajñāyāḥ phalamāha —
tayā prajñayā janito yaḥ saṃskāraḥ so'nyān saṃskārān vyutthānajān samādhijāṃśca saṃskārān pratibadhnāti svakāryakaraṇākṣamān karotītyarthaḥ | yatastattvarūpatayā'nayā janitāḥ saṃskārā balavatvādatattvarūpaprajñājanitān saṃskārān bādhituṃ śaknuvanti | atastāmeva prajñāmabhyasedityuktaṃ bhavati || 50 ||

evaṃ samprajñātasamādhimabhidhāyāsamprajñātaṃ vaktumāha —
tasyāpi samprajñātasya nirodhe vilaye sati sarvāsāṃ cittavṛttīnāṃ kāraṇe pravilayādyā saṃskāramātrādvṛttirudeti tasyāṃ neti neti kevalaṃ paryudasanānnirbījaḥ samādhirbhavati yasmin sati puruṣaḥ svarūpaniṣṭhaḥ śuddho bhavati || 51 ||



tadatrādhikṛtasya yogasya lakṣaṇaṃ cittavṛttinirodhapadānāṃ vyākhyānamabhyāsavairāgyalakṣaṇasyopāyadvayasya svarūpaṃ bhedaṃ cābhidhāya samprajñātāsamprajñātabhedena yogasya mukhyāmukhyabhedamuktvā yogābhyāsapradarśanapūrvakaṃ vistāreṇopāyān pradarśya sugamopāyapradarśanaparatayā īśvarasya svarūpapramāṇaprabhāvavācakopāsanāni tatphalāni ca nirṇīya cittavikṣepāṃstattatsahabhuvaśca duḥkhādīn vistareṇa ca tatpratiṣedhopāyānekatvābhyāsamaitryādiprāṇāyāmādīn samprajñātāsamprajñātapūrvāṅgabhūtaviṣayavatī pravṛttirityādīnākhyāyopasaṃhāradvāreṇa ca samāpattiṃ lakṣaṇaphalasahitāṃ svasvaviṣayasahitāṃ coktvā samprajñātāsamprajñātayorupasaṃhāramabhidhāya sabījapūrvakanirbījasamādhirabhihita iti vyākṛto yogapādaḥ |

dhāreśvarabhojadevaviracitāyāṃ rājamārtaṇḍābhidhāyāṃ pātañjalavṛttau

iti samādhipādaḥ || 1 ||



atha sādhanapādaḥ || 2 ||

te te duṣprāpayogarddhisiddhaye yena darśitāḥ | upāyāḥ sa jagannāthastryakṣo'stu prārthitāptaye || tadevaṃ prathame pāde samāhitacittasya sopāyaṃ yogamabhidhāya vyutthitacittasyāpi kathamupāyābhyāsapūrvako yogaḥ svāsthyamupayātīti tatsādhanānuṣṭhānapratipādanāya kriyāyogamāha —

tapaḥ śāstrāntaropadiṣṭaṃ kṛcchracāndrāyaṇādi | svādhyāyaḥ praṇavapūrvāṇāṃ mantrāṇāṃ japaḥ | īśvarapranidhānaṃ sarvakriyāṇāṃ tasmin paramagurau phalanirapekṣatayā samarpaṇam | etāni kriyāyoga ityucyate || 1 ||

sa kimarthamityāha —
kleśā vakṣyamāṇāsteṣāṃ tanūkaraṇaṃ svakāryakaraṇapratibandhaḥ | samādhiruktalakṣaṇaḥ (1|17)| tasya bhāvanā cetasi punaḥpunarniveśanaṃ sā'rthaḥ prayojanaṃ yasya sa tathoktaḥ | etaduktaṃ bhavati — ete tapaḥprabhṛtayo'bhyasyamānāścittagatānavidyādīn kleśān śithilīkurvantaḥ samādherupakārakatāṃ bhajante | tasmāt prathamaṃ kriyāyogavidhānapareṇa yoginā bhavitavyamityupadiṣṭam || 2 ||

kleśatanūkaraṇārtha ityuktam | tatra ke kleśā ityāha —
avidyādayāḥ vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇāḥ pañca | te bādhanālakṣaṇaṃ paritāpamupajanayantaḥ kleśaśabdavācyā bhavanti | te hi cetasi pravartamānāḥ saṃskāralakṣaṇaṃ guṇapariṇāmaṃ draḍhayanti || 3 ||

satyapi sarveṣāṃ tulyakleśatve mūlabhūtatvādavidyāyāḥ prādhānyaṃ pratipādayitumāha —
avidyā moho'nātmanyātmābhimāna iti yāvat | sā kṣetraṃ prasavabhūmiruttareṣāmasmitādīnāṃ pratyekaṃ prasuptatanvādibhedena caturvidhānām | ato yatrāvidyā viparyayajñānarūpā śithilībhavati tatra kleśānāmasmitādīnāṃ nodbhavo dṛśyate | viparyayajñānasadbhāve ca teṣāmudbhavadarśanāt sthitameva mūlatvamavidyāyāḥ | prasuptatanuvicchinnodārāṇāmiti | tatra ye kleśāścittabhūmau sthitāḥ prabodhakābhāve svakāryaṃ nārabhante te prasuptā ityucyante | yathā bālāvasthāyāṃ bālasya hi vāsanārūpāḥ sthitā api kleśāḥ prabodhakasahakāryabhāve nābhivyajyante | te tanavo ye svasvapratipakṣabhāvanayā śithilīkṛtakāryasampādanaśaktayo vāsanā'vaśeṣatayā cetasyavasthitāḥ prabhūtāṃ sāmagrīmantareṇa svakāryamārabdhumakṣamā yathā'bhyāsavato yoginaḥ | te vicchinnā ye kenacidbalavatā kleśenābhibhūtaśaktayastiṣṭhanti yathā dveṣāvasthāyāṃ rāgo rāgāvasthāyāṃ vā dveṣaḥ | na hyanayoḥ parasparaviruddhayoryugapat sambhavo'sti | te udārā ye prāptasahakārisannidhayaḥ svaṃ svaṃ kāryamabhinirvartayanti yathā sadaiva yogaparipanthino vyutthānadaśāyām | eṣāṃ pratyekaṃ caturvidhānāmapi mūlabhūtatvena sthitā'pyavidyā'nvayitvena pratīyate | na hi kvacidapi kleśānāṃ viparyayānvayanirapekṣāṇāṃ svarūpamupalabhyate | tasmāt [pā0 tasyāṃ ca] mithyājñānarūpāyāmavidyāyāṃ samyagjñānena nivartitāyāṃ dagdhabījakalpānāmeṣāṃ na kvacit praroho'sti | ato'vidyānimittatvamavidyānvayaścaiteṣāṃ niścīyate | ataḥ sarve'pyavidyāvyapadeśabhājaḥ | sarveṣāṃ ca kleśānāṃ cittavikṣepakāritvādyoginā prathamameva taducchede yatnaḥ kārya iti || 4 ||

avidyālakṣaṇamāha —
atasmiṃstatpratibhāso'vidyetyavidyāyāḥ sāmānyalakṣaṇam | tasyā eva bhedapratipādanam — anityeṣu ghaṭādiṣu nityatvābhimāno'vidyetyucyate | evamaśuciṣu kāyādiṣu śucityābhimāno duḥkheṣu viṣayeṣu sukhābhimāno'nātmaśarīra ātmābhimānaḥ | etenāpuṇye puṇyabhramo'narthe'rthabhramo vyākhyātaḥ || 5 ||

asmitāṃ lakṣayitumāha —
dṛkśaktiḥ puruṣaḥ | darśanaśaktī rajastamobhyāmanabhibhūtaḥ sātvikaḥ pariṇāmo'ntaḥkaraṇarūpaḥ | anayorbhoktṛbhogyatvena jaḍājaḍatvenātyantabhinnarūpayorekatābhimāno'smitetyucyate | yathā prakṛtirvastutaḥ kartṛtvabhoktṛtvarahitāpi kartryahamityabhimanyate [pā0 yathā prakṛtivatā kartṛtvarahitenāpi kartāhamityabhimanyate] so'yamasmitākhyo viparyāsaḥ kleśaḥ || 6 ||

rāgasya lakṣaṇamāha —
sukhamanuśeta iti sukhānuśayī | sukhajñasya sukhānubhūtipūrvakaḥ sukhasādhaneṣu tṛṣṇārūpo gardho rāgasaṃjñakaḥ kleśaḥ || 7 ||

dveṣalakṣaṇamāha —
duḥkhamuktalakṣaṇam | tadabhijñasya tadanusmṛtipūrvakaṃ tatsādhaneṣvanabhilaṣato yo'yaṃ nindātmakaḥ krodhaḥ sa dveṣalakṣaṇaḥ kleśaḥ || 8 ||

abhiniveśasya lakṣaṇamāha —
pūrvajanmānubhūtamaraṇaduḥkhānubhavavāsanābalādbhayarūpaḥ samupajāyamānaḥ śarīraviṣayādibhirmama viyogo mā bhūdityanvahamanubandharūpaḥ sarvasyaivā''kṛmerbrahmaparyantaṃ nimittamantareṇa pravartamāno'bhiniveśākhyaḥ kleśaḥ || 9 ||

tadevaṃ vyutthānasya kleśātmakatvādekāgratā'bhyāsakāmena prathamaṃ kleśāḥ parihartavyāḥ | na cājñātānāṃ teṣāṃ parihāraḥ kartuṃ śakya iti tajjñānāya teṣāmuddeśaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ kṣetraṃ vibhāgaṃ cābhidhāya sthūlasūkṣmabhedabhinnānāṃ teṣāṃ prahāṇopāyavibhāgamāha —
te sukṣmāḥ kleśāḥ ye vāsanārūpeṇaiva sthitāḥ svavṛttirūpaṃ pariṇāmaṃ nārabhante | te pratiprasavena pratilomapariṇāmena heyāstyaktavyāḥ | svakāraṇe'smitāyāṃ kṛtārthaṃ savāsanaṃ cittaṃ yadā praviṣṭaṃ bhavati tadā kutasteṣāṃ nirmūlānāṃ sambhavaḥ || 10 ||

sthūlānāṃ hānopāyamāha —
teṣāṃ kleśānāmārabdhakāryāṇāṃ yāḥ sukhaduḥkhamohātmikā vṛttayastā dhyānaheyāḥ | dhyānenaiva cittaikāgratālakṣaṇena hātavyā ityarthaḥ | cittaparikarmābhyāsamātreṇaiva sthūlatvāt tāsāṃ nivṛttirbhavati | yathā vastrādau sthūlo malaḥ prakṣālanamātreṇaiva nivartate | yastatra sūkṣmāṃśaḥ sa taistairupāyairuttāpanaprabhṛtibhireva nivartayituṃ śakyate || 11 ||

evaṃ kleśānāṃ tattvamabhidhāya karmāśayasya tadabhidhātumāha —
karmāśaya ityanena svarūpaṃ tasyābhihitam | ato vāsanārūpāṇyeva karmāṇi | kleśamūla ityanena kāraṇamabhihitaṃ yataḥ karmaṇāṃ śubhāśubhānāṃ kleśā eva nimittam | dṛṣṭādṛṣṭajanmavedanīya ityanena phalamuktam | asminneva janmani anubhavanīyo dṛṣṭajanmavedanīyaḥ | janmāntarānubhavanīyo'dṛṣṭajanmavedanīyaḥ | tathāhi — kānicit puṇyāni devatārādhanādīni tīvrasaṃvegena kṛtāni ihaiva janmani jātyāyurbhogalakṣaṇaṃ phalaṃ prayacchanti yathā nandīśvarasya bhagavanmaheśvarārādhanabalādihaiva janmani jātyādayo viśiṣṭāḥ prādurbhūtāḥ | evamanveṣāṃ viśvāmitrādīnāṃ tapaḥprabhāvājjātyāyuṣī | keṣāñcijjātireva yathā tīvrasaṃvegena duṣṭakarmakṛtāṃ nahuṣādīnāṃ jātyantarādipariṇāmaḥ | urvaśyāśca kārtikeyavane latārūpatayā | evaṃ vyastasamastatvena yathāyogyaṃ yojyamiti || 12 ||

idānīṃ karmāśayasya svabhedabhinnaṃ phalamāha —
mūlamuktalakṣaṇāḥ kleśāḥ | teṣvanabhibhūteṣu satsu karmaṇāṃ kuśalākuśalarūupāṇāṃ vipākaḥ phalaṃ jātyāyurbhogā bhavanti | jātirmanuṣyādiḥ | āyuścirakālamekaśarīrasambandhaḥ | bhogā viṣayā indriyāṇi sukhasaṃvidduḥkhasaṃvicca sukhaduḥkhādīni karmakaraṇabhāvabodhanavyutpatyā bhogaśabdasya | idamatra tātparyam — cittabhūmāvanādikālasañcitāḥ karmavāsanā yathā yathā pākamupayānti tathā tathā guṇapradhānabhāvena sthitā jātyāyurbhogalakṣaṇaṃ svakāryamārabhante || 13 ||

uktānāṃ karmaphalatvena jātyādīnāṃ svakāraṇakarmānusāriṇāṃ kāryakartṛtvamāha —
hlādaḥ sukhamṃ paritāpo duḥkhaṃ tau phalaṃ yeṣāṃ te tathoktāḥ | puṇyaṃ kuśalaṃ karma tadviparītamapuṇyaṃ te karmaṇī kāraṇaṃ yeṣāṃ teṣāṃ bhāvastasmāt | etaduktaṃ bhavati — puṇyakarmārabdhā jātyāyurbhogā hlādaphalāḥ | apuṇyakarmārabdhāstu paritāpaphalāḥ | etacca prāṇimātrāpekṣayā dvaividhyam || 14 ||

yoginastatsarvaṃ duḥkhamityāha —
vivekinaḥ parijñātakleśādivivekasya dṛśyamātraṃ sakalameva bhogasādhanaṃ saviṣaṃ svādvannamiva duḥkhameva pratikūlavedanīyamevetyarthaḥ | yasmādatyantābhijāto yogī duḥkhaleśenāpyudvijate | yathā — akṣipātramūrṇātantusparśamātreṇaiva mahatīṃ pīḍāmanubhavati netaradaṅgaṃ tathā vivekī svalpaduḥkhānubandhenāpyudvijate | kathamityāha — pariṇāmatāpasaṃskāraduḥkhaiḥ | viṣayāṇāmupabhujyamānānāṃ yathāyathaṃ gardhābhivṛddhestadaprāptikṛtasya sukhaduḥkhasyāparihāryatayā duḥkhāntarasādhanatvānnāstyeva sukharūpateti pariṇāmaduḥkhatvam | upagṛhyamāṇeṣu sukhasādhaneṣu tatpratipanthinaṃ prati dveṣasya sarvadaivāvasthitatvāt sukhānubhavakāle'pi tāpaduḥkhaṃ duṣpariharamiti tāpaduḥkhatā | saṃskāraduḥkhaṃ tu svābhimatānabhimataviṣayasannidhāne sukhasaṃvidduḥkhasaṃviccopajāyamānā tathāvidhameva svakṣetre saṃskāramārabhate | saṃskārācca punastathāvidhasaṃvidanubhava ityaparimitasaṃskārotpattidvāreṇa sarvasyaiva duḥkhānuvedhādduḥkhatvam | evamuktaṃ bhavati — kleśakarmāśayavipākasaṃskārānucchedāt sarvasyaiva duḥkhatvam | guṇavṛttivirodhācceti | guṇānāṃ satvarajastamasāṃ yā vṛttayaḥ sukhaduḥkhamoharūpāḥ parasparamabhibhāvyābhibhāvakatvena viruddhā jāyante | tāsāṃ sarvatraiva duḥkhānuvedhād duḥkhatvam | etaduktaṃ bhavati — aikāntikīmātyantikīṃ ca duḥkhanivṛttimicchato vivekina uktarūpakāraṇacatuṣṭayāḥ sarve viṣayā duḥkharūpatayā pratibhānti | tasmācca sarvakarmavipāko duḥkharūpa evetyuktaṃ bhavati || 15 ||

tadevamuktasya kleśakarmāśayavipākarāśeravidyāprabhavatvādavidyāyāśca mithyājñānarūpatayā samyagjñānocchedyatvāt samyagjñānasya ca sasādhanaheyopādeyāvadhāraṇarūpatvāt tadabhidhānamāha —
bhūtasyātikrāntatvādanubhūyamānasya tyaktumaśakyatvādanāgatameva saṃsāraduḥkhaṃ hātavyamityuktaṃ bhavati || 16 ||

heyahetumāha —
draṣṭā cidrūpaḥ puruṣaḥ | dṛśyaṃ buddhisattvaṃ | tayoravivekakhyātipūrvako yo'sau saṃyogo bhoktṛbhogyatvena sannidhānaṃ sa heyasya duḥkhasya guṇapariṇāmarūpasya saṃsārasya hetuḥ kāraṇam | tannivṛtyā saṃsāranivṛttirbhavatītyarthaḥ || 17 ||

draṣṭṛdṛśyayoḥ saṃyoga ityuktam | tatra dṛśyasya svarūpaṃ kāryaṃ prayojanaṃ cāha —
prakāśaḥ sattvasya dharmaḥ | kriyā pravṛttirūpā rajasaḥ | sthitirniyamarūpā tamasaḥ | tāḥ prakāśakriyāsthitayaḥ śīlaṃ svābhāvikaṃ rūpaṃ yasya tattathāvidhamiti svarūpamasya nirdiṣṭam | bhūtendriyātmakamiti | bhūtāni sthūlasūkṣmabhedena dvividhāni pṛthivyādīni gandhatanmātrādīni ca | indriyāṇi buddhīndriyakarmendriyāntaḥkaraṇabhedena trividhāni | ubhayametadgrāhyagrahaṇarūpātmā svarūpābhinnaḥ pariṇāmo yasya tattathāvidhamityanenāsya kāryamuktam | bhogaḥ kathitalakṣaṇaḥ | apavargo vivekakhyātipūrvikā saṃsāranivṛttiḥ | tau bhogāpavargavarthaḥ prayojanaṃ yasya tattathāvidhaṃ dṛśyamityarthaḥ || 18 ||

tasya dṛśyasya nānāvasthārūpapariṇāmātmakasya heyatvena jñātavyatvāt tadavasthāḥ kathayitumāha —
guṇānāṃ parvāṇyavasthāviśeṣāścatvāro jñātavyā ityupadiṣṭaṃ bhavati | tatra viśeṣā mahābhūtendriyāṇi | aviśeṣāstanmātrāntaḥkaraṇāni | liṅgamātraṃ buddhiḥ | aliṅgamavyaktamityuktam | sarvatra triguṇarūpasyāvyaktasyānvayitvena pratyabhijñānādavaśyaṃ jñātavyatvena yogakāle catvāri parvāṇi nirdiṣṭāni || 19 ||

evaṃ heyatvena dṛśyasya prathamaṃ jñātavyatvāt tadavasthāsahitaṃ vyākhyāyopādeyaṃ draṣṭāraṃ vyākhyātumāha —
draṣṭā puruṣo dṛśimātraścetanāmātram | mātragrahaṇaṃ dharmadharminirāsārtham | keciddhi cetanāmātmano dharmamicchanti | sa śuddho'pi pariṇāmitvādyabhāvena svapratiṣṭho'pi pratyayānupaśyaḥ | pratyayā viṣayoparaktāni vijñānāni tāni anu avyavadhānena pratisaṃkramādyabhāvena paśyati | etaduktaṃ bhavati — jātaviṣayoparāgāyāmeva buddhau sannidhimātreṇaiva puruṣasya draṣṭutvamiti || 20 ||

sa eva bhoktetyāha —
dṛśyasya prāguktalakṣaṇasya ya ātmā yat svarūpaṃ tadartha eva | tasya puruṣārthabhoktṛtvasampādanaṃ nāma svārthaparihāreṇa proyojanam | na hi pradhānaṃ pravartamānamātmanaḥ kiñcit prayojanamapekṣya pravartate kintu puruṣasya bhoktṛtvaṃ sampādayitumiti || 21 ||

yadyevaṃ puruṣsya bhogasampādanameva proyojanaṃ tadā smpādite tasmiṃstanniṣprayojanaṃ viratavyāpāraṃ syāt | tasmiṃśca pariṇāmaśūnye śuddhatvāt sarve draṣṭāro bandharahitāḥ syuḥ | tataśca saṃsāroccheda ityāśaṅkyāha —
yadyapi vivekakhyātiparyantādbhogasampādanāt kamapi kṛtārthaṃ puruṣaṃ prati tannaṣṭaṃ viratavyāpāraṃ tathāpi sarvapuruṣasādhāraṇatvādanyān pratyanaṣṭavyāpāramavatiṣṭhate | ataḥ pradhānasya sakalabhoktṛsādhāraṇatvānna kadācidapi vināśaḥ | ekasya muktau vā na sarvamuktiprasaṅga ityuktaṃ bhavati || 22 ||

dṛśyadraṣṭārau vyākhyāya saṃyogaṃ vyākhyātumāha —
kāryadvāreṇāsya lakṣaṇaṃ karoti | svaśaktirdṛśyasya svabhāvaḥ | svāmiśaktirdraṣṭuḥ svarūpam | tayordvayorapi saṃvedyasaṃvedakatvena vyavasthitayoryā svarūpopalabdhistasyāḥ kāraṇaṃ yaḥ sa saṃyogaḥ | sa ca sahajo bhogyabhoktṛbhāvasvarūpānanyaḥ [ pā0 sa ca sahajabhogyabhoktṛbhāvasvarūpānnānyaḥ]| na hi tayornityayorvyāpakayoḥ svarūpādatiriktaḥ kaścit saṃyogaḥ | yadeva bhogyasya bhogyatvaṃ bhoktuśca bhoktṛtvamanādisiddhaṃ sa eva saṃyogaḥ || 23 ||

tasyāpi kāraṇamāha —
yā pūrvaṃ viparyāsātmikā moharūpā'vidyā vyākhyātā (2|4-5) sā tasyāvivekakhyātirūpasya saṃyogasya kāraṇam || 24 ||

heyaṃ hānikriyākarmocyate | kiṃ punastaddhānamityāha —
tasyā avidyāyāḥ svarūpaviruddhena samyagjñānenonmūlitāyā yo'yamabhāvastasmin sati tatkāryasya saṃyogasyāpyabhāvastaddhānamityucyate | ayamarthaḥ — naitasyā'mūrtavastuno vibhāgo yujyate [pā0 naitasya mūrtadravyavat parityāgo yujyate] kintu jātāyāṃ vivekakhyātavavivekanimittaḥ saṃyogaḥ svayameva nivartata iti tasya hānam | yadeva ca saṃyogasya hānaṃ tadeva nityaṃ kevalasyāpi puruṣasya kaivalyaṃ vyapadiśyate || 25 ||

tadevaṃ dṛśyasaṃyogasya svarūpaṃ kāraṇaṃ kāryaṃ cābhihitam | atha hānopāyakathanadvāreṇa upādeyakāraṇamāha —
anye guṇā anyaḥ puruṣa ityevaṃvidhasya vivekasya yā khyātiḥ prakhyā sā'sya hānasya dṛśyaduḥkhaparityāgasyopāyaḥ kāraṇam | kīdṛśī | aviplavā na vidyate viplavo vicchedo'ntarā'ntarā'bhyutthānarūpo yasyāḥ sā aviplavā | idamatra tātparyam — pratipakṣabhāvanābalādavidyāpralaye vinivṛttakartṛtvabhoktṛtvābhimānāyā rajastamomalānabhibhūtāyā buddherantarmukhā yā cicchāyāsaṃkrāntiḥ sā vivekakhyātirucyate | tasyāṃ ca santatatvena pravṛttāyāṃ satyāṃ dṛśyasyādhikāranivṛtterbhavatyeva kaivalyam || 26 ||

utpannavivekakhyāteḥ puruṣasya yādṛśī prajñā bhavati tāṃ kathayan vivekakhyātereva svarūpamāha —
tasyotpannavivekajñānasya jñātavyavivekarūpā prajñā prāntabhūmau sakalasālambanasamādhiparyante saptaprakārā bhavantītyarthaḥ | tatra kāryavimuktirūpā catuṣprakārā —
1| jñātaṃ mayā jñeyam | jñātavyaṃ na kiñcidasti |
2| kṣīṇā me kleśāḥ | na kiñcit kṣetavyamasti |
3| adhigataṃ mayā jñānam |
4| prāptā mayā vivekakhyātiriti | pratyayāntaraparihāreṇa tasyāmavasthāyāmīdṛśyeva prajñā jāyate | īdṛśī prajñā kāryaviṣayaṃ nirmalaṃ jñānaṃ kāryavimuktirityucyate | cittavimuktistridhā —
5| caritārthā me buddhiḥ | guṇā hṛtādhikārā giriśikharanipatitā iva grāvāṇo na punaḥ sthitiṃ yāsyanti |
6| svakāraṇe pravilayābhimukhānāṃ guṇānāṃ mohābhidhānamūlakāraṇābhāvānniṣprayojanatvāccāmīṣāṃ kutaḥ praroho bhavet |
7| svasthībhūtaśca [pā0 sātmībhūtaśca] me samādhistasmin sati svarupapratiṣṭho'hamiti | īdṛśī triprakārā cittavimuktiḥ |
tadevamīdṛśyāṃ saptavidhabhūmiprajñāyāmupajātāyāṃ puruṣaḥ kevala ityucyate || 27 ||

vivekakhyātiḥ saṃyogābhāvaheturityuktam | tasyāstu utpattau kiṃ nimittamityāha —
yogāṅgāni vakṣyamāṇāni | teṣāmanuṣṭhānājjñānapūrvakābhyāsādāvivekakhyāteraśuddhikṣaye cittasattvasya prakāśāvaraṇarūpakleśātmakāśuddhikṣaye yā jñānadīptistāratamyena sāttvikaḥ pariṇāmo vivekakhyātiparyantastasyāḥ khyāterheturityarthaḥ || 28 ||

yogāṅgānāmanuṣṭhānādaśuddhikṣaya ityuktam | kāni punastāni yogāṅgānīti teṣāmuddeśamāha —
iha kānicit samādheḥ sākṣādupakārakāṇi yathā dhāraṇādīni kānicit pratipakṣabhūtahiṃsādivitarkonmūlanadvāreṇa samādhimupakurvanti yathā yamādayaḥ | tatrāsanādīnāmuttarotaramupakārakatvam | tadyathā — satyāsanajaye prāṇāyāmasthairyam | evamuttaratrāpi yojyam || 29 ||

krameṇaiṣāṃ svarūpamāha —
tatra prāṇaviyogaprayojanavyāpāro hiṃsā | sā ca sarvānarthahetuḥ | tadabhāvo'hiṃsā | hiṃsāyāḥ sarvaprakāreṇaiva parihāryatvāt prathamaṃ tadabhāvarūpāyā ahiṃsāyā nirdeśaḥ | satyaṃ vāṅmanasoryathārthatvam | steyaṃ parasvāpaharaṇaṃ tadabhāvo'steyam | brahmacaryamupasthasaṃyamaḥ | aparigraho bhogasādhanānāmanaṅgīkāraḥ | ta ete'hiṃsādayaḥ pañca yamaśabdavācyā yogāṅgatvena nirdiṣṭāḥ || 30 ||

eṣāṃ viśeṣamāha —
jātirbrāhmaṇatvādiḥ | deśastīrthādiḥ | kālaścaturdaśyādiḥ | samayo brāhmaṇaprayojanādiḥ | etaiścaturbhiranavacchinnāḥ pūrvoktā ahiṃsādayo yamāḥ sarvāsu kṣiptādiṣu cittabhūmiṣu bhavā mahāvratamityucyate | tadyathā — brāhmaṇaṃ na haniṣyāmi tīrthe na kaṃcana haniṣyāmi caturdaśyāṃ na haniṣyāmi devabrāhmaṇaprayojanavyatirekeṇa kamapi na haniṣyāmīti | evaṃ caturvidhāvacchedavyatirekeṇa kiṃcit kadācit kasmiṃścidarthe na haniṣyāmītyanavacchinnāḥ | evaṃ satyādiṣu yathāyogaṃ yojyam | itthamaniyatīkṛtāḥ sāmānyenaiva pravṛttā mahāvratamityucyate na punaḥ parakīyaparicchinnāvadhāraṇam [pā0 na punaḥ paricchinnāvadhāraṇam] || 31 ||

niyamānāha —
śaucaṃ dvividham — bāhyamābhyantaraṃ ca | bāhyaṃ mṛjjalādibhiḥ kāyādiprakṣālanam | ābhyantaraṃ maitryādibhiścittamalānāṃ prakṣālanam | santoṣastuṣṭiḥ | śeṣāḥ prāgeva (2|1) kṛtavyākhyānāḥ | ete śaucādayo niyamaśabdavācyāḥ || 32 ||

kathameṣāṃ yogāṅgatvamityāha —
vitarkyante iti vitarkā yogaparipanthino hiṃsādayaḥ | teṣāṃ pratipakṣabhāvane sati yadā bādhā bhavati tadā yogaḥ sukaro bhavatīti bhavatyeva yamaniyamayoryogāṅgatvam || 33 ||

idānīṃ vitarkāṇāṃ svarūpaṃ bhedaprakāraṃ phalaṃ ca krameṇāha —
ete pūrvoktā hiṃsādayaḥ prathamaṃ tridhā bhidyante kṛtakāritānumodanabhedena | tatra svayaṃ niṣpāditāḥ kṛtāḥ | kuru kurviti prayojakavyāpāreṇa samutpāditāḥ kāritāḥ | anyena kriyamāṇāḥ sādhvityaṅgīkṛtā anumoditāḥ | etacca traividhyaṃ parasparaṃ vyāmohanirākaraṇāvadhāraṇāyocyate | anyathā mandamatirevaṃ manyeta na mayā svayaṃ hiṃsā kṛteti nāsti me doṣaḥ | eteṣāṃ kāraṇapratipādanāya lobhakrodhamohapūrvakā iti | yadyapi lobhaḥ prathamaṃ nirdiṣṭastathā'pi sarvakleśānāṃ mohasyā'nātmanyātmābhimānalakṣaṇasya nidānatvāt tasmin sati svaparavibhāgapūrvakatvena lobhakrodhādīnāmudbhavānmūlatvamavaseyam | mohapūrvikā sarvā doṣajātirityarthaḥ | lobhastṛṣṇā | krodhaḥ kṛtyākṛtyavivekonmūlakaḥ prajvalanātmakaścittadharmaḥ | pratyekaṃ kṛtādibhedena triprakārā api hiṃsādayo mohādikāraṇatvena tridhā bhidyante | eṣāmeva punaravasthābhedena traividhyamāha — mṛdumadhyādhimātrāḥ | mṛdavo mandāḥ na tīvrā nāpi madhyāḥ | madhyā nāpi mandā nāpi tīvrāḥ | adhimātrāstīvrāḥ | pāścāttyā navabhedāḥ | itthaṃ traividhye sati saptaviṃśatirbhavati | mṛdvādīnāmapi pratyekaṃ mṛdumadhyādhimātrabhedāt traividhyaṃ sambhavati | tadyathāyogaṃ yojyam | tadyathā — mṛdumṛdurmṛdumadhyo mṛdutīvra iti | eṣāṃ phalamāha — duḥkhājñānānantaphalā duḥkhaṃ pratikūlatayā'vabhāsamāno rājasaścittadharmaḥ | ajñānaṃ mithyājñānaṃ saṃśayaviparyayarūpam | te duḥkhājñāne'nantamaparicchinnaṃ phalaṃ yeṣāṃ te tathoktāḥ | itthaṃ teṣāṃ svarūpakāraṇādibhedena jñātānāṃ pratipakṣabhāvanayā yoginā parihāraḥ kartavya ityupadiṣṭaṃ bhavati || 34 ||

eṣāmabhyāsavaśāt prakarṣamāgacchatāmanuniṣpādinyaḥ siddhayo yathā bhavanti tathā krameṇa pratipādayitumāha —
tasyā'hiṃsāṃ bhāvayataḥ sannidhau sahajavirodhināmapyahinakulādīnāṃ vairatyāgo nirmatsaratayā'vasthānaṃ bhavati | hiṃsrasvabhāvā api hiṃsāṃ tyajantītyarthaḥ [pā0 hiṃsrā api hiṃsratvaṃ parityajantītyarthaḥ] || 35 ||

satyābhyāsavataḥ kiṃ bhavatītyāha —
kriyamāṇā hi kriyā yāgādikāḥ phalaṃ svargādikaṃ prayacchanti | tasya tu satyābhyāsavato yoginastathā satyaṃ prakṛṣyate yathā kriyāyāmakṛtāyāmapi yogī phalamāpnoti | tadvacanādyasya kasyacit kriyāmakurvato'pi kriyāphalaṃ bhavatītyarthaḥ || 36 ||

asteyābhyāsavataḥ phalamāha —
asteyaṃ yadā'bhyasati tadāsya tatprakarṣānnirabhilāṣasyāpi sarvato divyāni ratnānyupatiṣṭhante || 37 ||

brahmacaryābhyāsasya phalamāha —
yaḥ kila brahmacaryamabhyasyati tasya tatprakarṣānniratiśayaṃ vīryaṃ sāmarthyamāvirbhavati | vīryanirodhe hi brahmacaryasya prakarṣāccharīrendriyamanaḥsu vīryaṃ prakarṣamāgacchati || 38 ||

aparigrahasya phalamāha —
kathamityasya bhāvaḥ kathantā | janmanaḥ kathantā janmakathantā | tasyāḥ sambodhaḥ samyagjñānaṃ janmāntare ko'hamāsaṃ kīdṛśaḥ kiṃkāryakārīti jijñāsāyāṃ sarvameva samyagjānātītyarthaḥ | na kevalaṃ bhogasādhanaparigraha eva parigraho yāvadātmanaḥ śarīraparigraho'pi parigraho bhogasādhanatvāccharīrasya | tasmin sati rāgānubandhādbahirmukhāyāmeva pravṛttau na tāttvikajñānaprādurbhāvaḥ | yadā punaḥ śarīrādiparigrahanairapekṣyeṇa mādhyasthyamavalambate tadā madhyasthasya rāgādityāgāt samyagjñānaheturbhavatyeva pūrvāparajanmasambodhaḥ || 39 ||

uktā yamānāṃ siddhayaḥ | atha niyamānāmāha —
yaḥ śaucaṃ bhāvayati tasya svāṅgeṣvapi kāraṇasvarūpaparyālocanadvāreṇa jugupsā ghṛṇā samupajāyate — aśucirayaṃ kāyo nātrāgrahaḥ kārya iti | amunaiva hetunā parairanyaiśca kāyavadbhirasaṃsargaḥ samparkābhāvaḥ saṃsargaparivarjanamityarthaḥ | yaḥ kila svameva kāyaṃ jugupsate tattadavadyadarśanāt sa kathaṃ parakīyaistathābhūtaiśca kāyaiḥ saṃsargamanubhavati || 40 ||

śaucasyaiva phalāntaramāha —
bhavantīti vākyaśeṣaḥ | sattvaṃ prakāśasukhādyātmakaṃ tasya śuddhī rajastamobhyāmanabhibhavaḥ | saumanasyaṃ khedānanubhavena mānasī prītiḥ | ekāgratā niyataviṣaye cetasaḥ sthairyam | indriyajayo viṣayaparāṅmukhāṇāmindriyāṇāmātmanyavasthānam | ātmadarśane vivekakhyātirūpe cittasya yogyatvaṃ samarthatvam | śaucābhyāsavata eva ete sattvaśuddhyādayaḥ krameṇa prādurbhavanti | tathāhi — sattvaśuddheḥ saumanasyam | saumanasyādekāgratā | ekāgratāyā indriyajayaḥ | tasmādātmadarśanayogyateti || 41 ||

santoṣābhyāsasya phalamāha —
santoṣaprakarṣeṇa yoginastathāvidhamāntaraṃ sukhamāvirbhavati yasya bāhyaṃ viṣayasukhaṃ śatāṃśenāpi na samam || 42 ||

tapasaḥ phalamāha —
tapaḥ samabhyasyamānaṃ cetasaḥ kleśādilakṣaṇāśuddhikṣayadvāreṇa kāyendriyāṇāṃ siddhiprakarṣamādadhāti | ayamarthaḥ — cāndrāyaṇādinā cittakleśakṣayastatkṣayādindriyādīnāṃ sūkṣmavyavahitaviprakṛṣṭadarśanādisāmarthyamāvirbhavati kāyasya yatheccham aṇutvamahattvādīni || 43 ||

svādhyāyasya phalamāha —
abhipretamantrajapādilakṣaṇe svādhyāye prakṛṣyamāṇe yogina iṣṭayā'bhipretayā devatayā samprayogo bhavati | sā devatā pratyakṣā bhatītyarthaḥ || 44 ||

īśvarapraṇidhānasya phalamāha —
īśvare yat praṇidhānaṃ bhaktiviśeṣastasmāt samādheruktalakṣaṇasyāvirbhāvo bhavati yasmāt sa bhagavānīśvaraḥ prasannaḥ sannantarāyarūpān kleśān parihṛtya samādhiṃ sambodhayati || 45 ||

yamaniyamānuktvā āsanamāha —
āsyate'nenetyāsanaṃ padmāsanadaṇḍāsanasvastikāsanādi | tadyadā sthiraṃ niṣkampaṃ sukhamanudvejanīyaṃ ca bhavati tadā yogāṅgatāṃ bhajate || 46 ||

tasyaiva sthirasukhaprāptyarthamupāyamāha —
tadāsanaṃ prayatnaśaithilyenā''nantyasamāpattyā ca sthiraṃ sukhaṃ bhavatīti sambandhaḥ | yadā yadā''sanaṃ badhnāmīti icchāṃ karoti prayatnaśaithilye'pyakleśenaiva tadā tadā''sanaṃ sampadyate | yadā cākāśādigata ānantye cetasaḥ samāpattiḥ kriyate'vadhānena [pā0 avyavadhānena] tādātmyamāpadyate tadā dehāhaṃkārābhāvānnāsanaṃ duḥkhajanakaṃ bhavati | asmiṃścāsanajaye sati samādhyantarāyabhūtā na prabhavantyaṅgamejayatvādayaḥ || 47 ||

tasyaivānuniṣpādi phalamāha —
tasminnāsanajaye sati dvandvaiḥ śītoṣṇakṣuttṛṣṇādibhiryogī nābhihanyata ityarthaḥ || 48 ||

āsanajayādanantaraṃ prāṇāyāmamāha —
āsanasthairye sati tannimittakaprāṇāyāmalakṣaṇo yogāṅgaviśeṣo'nuṣṭheyo bhavati | kīdṛśaḥ | svāsapraśvāsayorgativicchedalakṣaṇaḥ | śvāsapraśvāsau niruktau (1|31) tayostridhā recanastambhanapūraṇadvāreṇa bāhyābhyantareṣu sthāneṣu gateḥ pravāhasya vicchedo dhāraṇaṃ prāṇāyāma ucyate || 49 ||

tasyaiva sukhāvagamāya vibhajya svarūpaṃ kathayati — sa tu
bāhyavṛttiḥ śvāso recakaḥ | antarvṛttiḥ praśvāsaḥ pūrakaḥ | āntarastambhavṛttiḥ kumbhakaḥ | tasmin jalamiva kumbhe niścalatayā prāṇā avasthāpyanta iti kumbhakaḥ | trividho'yaṃ prāṇāyāmaḥ deśena kālena saṃkhyayā copalakṣito dīrghasūkṣmasaṃjño bhavati | deśopalakṣito yathā nāsāddvādaśāntādi nāsāmārabhya dvādaśāṅguliparyantamityarthaḥ | kālopalakṣito yathā ṣaṭtriṃśanmātrādipramāṇaḥ | saṃkhyayopalakṣito yathā iyato vārān kṛta etāvadbhiḥ śvāsapraśvāsaiḥ prathama udghāto bhavatīti | etajjñānāya saṃkhyāgrahaṇamupāttam | udghāto nāma nābhimūlāt preritasya vāyoḥ śirasyabhihananam || 50 ||

trīn prāṇāyāmānabhidhāya caturthamabhidhātumāha —
prāṇasya bāhyo viṣayo nāsāddvādaśāntādiḥ | ābhyantaro viṣayo hṛdayanābhicakrādiḥ | tau dvau viṣayāvākṣipya paryālocya yaḥ stambharūpī gativicchedaḥ sa caturthaḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ | tṛtīyasmāt kumbhakākhyādayamasya viśeṣaḥ — sa bāhyābhyantaraviṣayāvaparyālocyaiva sahasā taptopalanipatitajalanyāyena yugapat stambhavṛttyā niṣpādyate [pā0 niṣpadyate]| asya tu viṣayadvayākṣepako nirodhaḥ | ayamapi pūrvavaddeśakālasaṃkhyābhirupalakṣito draṣṭavyaḥ || 51 ||

caturvidhasyāsya phalamāha —
tatastasmāt prāṇāyāmāt prakāśasya cittasattvagatasya yadāvaraṇaṃ kleśarūpaṃ tat kṣīyate vinaśyatītyarthaḥ || 52 ||

phalāntaramāha —
dhāraṇā vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇāstāsu prāṇāyāmaiḥ kṣīṇadoṣaṃ mano yatra yatra dhāryate tatra tatra sthirībhavati na vikṣepaṃ bhajate || 53 ||

pratyāhārasya lakṣaṇamāha —
indriyāṇi viṣayebhyaḥ pratīpamāhriyante'sminniti pratyāhāraḥ | sa ca kathaṃ niṣpadyata ityāha — cakṣurādīnāmindriyāṇāṃ svaviṣayo rūpādistena samprayogastadābhimukhyena vartanam tadabhāvastadābhimukhyaṃ parityajya svarūpamātre'vasthānam | tasmin sati cittamātrānukāriṇīndriyāṇi bhavanti yataścittamanuvartamānāni madhukararājamiva makṣikāḥ sarvāṇīndriyāṇi pratīyante | ataścittanirodhe tāni pratyāhṛtāni bhavanti | teṣāṃ tatsvarūpānukāraḥ pratyāhāra uktaḥ || 54 ||

pratyāhāraphalamāha —
abhyasyamāne hi pratyāhāre tathā vaśyānyāyattānīndriyāṇi sampadyante yathā bāhyaviṣayābhimukhatāṃ nīyamānānyapi na yāntītyarthaḥ || 55 ||



tadevaṃ prathamapādoktalakṣaṇasya yogasyāṅgabhūtakleśatanūkaraṇaphalaṃ kriyāyogamabhidhāya kleśānāmuddeśaṃ svarūpaṃ kāraṇaṃ kṣetraṃ phalaṃ coktvā karmaṇāmapi bhedaṃ kāraṇaṃ svarūpaṃ phalaṃ cābhidhāya vipākasya kāraṇam svarūpaṃ cābhihitam | tatastyājyatvāt kleśādināṃ jñānavyatirekeṇa tyāgasyā'śakyatvājjñānasya ca śāstrāyattatvāt śāstrasya heyahānakāraṇopādeyopādānakāraṇabodhakatvena caturvyūhatvāt heyasya hānavyatirekeṇa svarūpāniṣpatterhānasahitaṃ caturvyūhaṃ svasvakāraṇasahitamabhidhāya upādeyakāraṇabhūtāyā vivekakhyāteḥ kāraṇabhūtānāmantaraṅgabahiraṅgabhāvena sthitānāṃ yamādīnāṃ svarūpaṃ phalasahitaṃ vyākṛtya āsanādīnāṃ dhāraṇāparyantānāṃ parasparamupakāryopakārakabhāvenāvasthitānāmuddeśamabhidhāya pratyekaṃ lakṣaṇakaraṇapūvakaṃ phalamabhihitam | tadayaṃ yogo yamaniyamādibhiḥ prāptabījabhāva āsanaprāṇāyāmairaṅkuritaḥ pratyāhāreṇa puṣpito dhyānadhāraṇāsamādhibhiḥ phaliṣyatīti vyākhyātaḥ sādhanapādaḥ |

iti dhāreśvarabhojaviracitāyāṃ rājamārtaṇḍābhidhāyāṃ pātañjalavṛttau

atha vibhūtipādaḥ || 3 ||

yatpādapadmasmaraṇādaṇimādivibhūtayaḥ | bhavanti bhavināmastu bhūtanāthaḥ sa bhūtaye ||
tadevaṃ pūrvoddiṣṭaṃ dhāraṇādyaṅgatrayaṃ nirṇetuṃ saṃyamasaṃjñābhidhānapūrvakaṃ bāhyābhyantarādisiddhipratipādanāya lakṣayitumupakramate | tatra dhāraṇāyāḥ svarūpamāha

deśe nābhicakranāsāgrādau cittasya bandho viṣayāntaraparihāreṇa yat sthirīkaraṇaṃ sā cittasya dhāraṇocyate | ayamarthaḥ — maitryādicittaparikarmavāsitāntaḥkaraṇena yamaniyamavatā jitāsanena parihṛtaprāṇavikṣepeṇa pratyāhṛtendriyagrāmeṇa nirbādhe pradeśa ṛjukāyena jitadvandvena yoginā nāsāgrādau samprajñātasya samādherabhyāsāya cittasya sthirīkaraṇaṃ kartavyamiti || 1 ||

dhāraṇāmabhidhāya dhyānamabhidhātumāha —
tatra tasmin pradeśe yatra cittaṃ dhṛtaṃ tatra pratyayasya jñānasya yā ekatānatā visadṛśapariṇāmaparihāradvāreṇa yadeva dhāraṇāyāmavalambanīkṛtaṃ tadavalambanatayaiva nirantaramutpattiḥ sā dhyānamucyate || 2 ||

caramayogāṅgaṃ samādhimāha —
tadevoktalakṣaṇaṃ dhyānaṃ yatrārthamātranirbhāsamarthākārasamāveśādudbhūtārtharūpaṃ nyagbhūtajñānasvarūpatvena svarūpaśūnyatāmivā''padyate sa samādhirityucyate | samyagādhīyata ekāgrīkriyate vikṣepān parihṛtya mano yatra sa samādhiḥ || 3 ||

uktalakṣaṇasya yogāṅgatrayasya vyavahārāya svaśāstre tāntrikīṃ saṃjñāṃ kartumāha —
ekasmin viṣaye dhāraṇādhyānasamādhitrayaṃ pravartamānaṃ saṃyamasaṃjñayā śāstre vyavahriyate || 4 ||

tasya phalamāha —
tasya saṃyamasya jayādabhyāsena sātmyotpādanāt prajñāyā vivekakhyāterālokaḥ prasavo bhavati | prajñā jñeyaṃ samyagavabhāsayatītyarthaḥ || 5 ||

tasyopayogamāha —
tasya saṃyamasya bhūmiṣu sthūlasūkṣmāvalambanabhedena sthitāsu cittavṛttiṣu viniyogaḥ kartavyaḥ | adharāmadharāṃ cittabhūmiṃ jitāṃ jitāṃ jñātvottarasyāṃ bhūmau saṃyamaḥ kāryaḥ | sa hyanātmīīkṛtādharabhūmiruttarasyāṃ bhūmau saṃyamaṃ kurvāṇaḥ phalabhāgbhavati || 6 ||

sādhanapāde yogāṅgānyaṣṭāvuddiśya pañcānāṃ lakṣaṇaṃ vidhāya trayāṇāṃ kathaṃ na kṛtamityāśaṅkyāha —
pūrvebhyo yamādibhyo yogāṅgebhyaḥ pāramparyeṇa samādherūpakārakebhyo dhāraṇādiyogāṅgatrayaṃ samprajñātasya samādherantaraṅgaṃ samādhisvarūpaniṣpādanāt || 7 ||

tasyāpi samādhyantarāpekṣayā bahiraṅgatvamāha —
nirbījasya nirālambanasya śūnyabhāvanā'paraparyāyasya samādheretadapi yogāṅgatrayaṃ bahiraṅgaṃ pāramparyeṇopakārakatvāt || 8 ||

idānīṃ yogasiddhīrvyākhyātukāmaḥ saṃyamasya viṣayaviśuddhiṃ kartuṃ krameṇa pariṇāmatrayamāha —
vyutthānaṃ kṣiptamūḍhavikṣiptākhyaṃ bhūmitrayam | nirodhaḥ prakṛṣṭasattvasyāṅgitayā cetasaḥ pariṇāmaḥ | tābhyāṃ vyutthānanirodhābhyāṃ yau janitau saṃskārau tayoryathākramam abhibhavaprādurbhāvau yadā bhavataḥ | abhibhavo nyagbhūtatayā kāryakaraṇāsāmarthyenāvasthānam | prādurbhāvo vartamāne'dhvanyabhivyaktarūpatayā''virbhābaḥ | tadā nirodhakṣaṇe cittasyobhayakṣaṇavṛttitvādanvayo yaḥ sa nirodhapariṇāma ucyate | ayamarthaḥ — yadā vyutthānasaskārarūpo dharmastirobhūto bhavati nirodhasaṃskārarūpaścāvirbhavati dharmirūpatayā ca cittamubhayānvayitve'pi nirodhātmanā'vasthitaṃ pratīyate tadā sa nirodhapariṇāmaśabdena vyavahriyate | calatvādguṇavṛttasya yadyapi cetaso niścalatvaṃ nāsti tathāpyevambhūtaḥ pariṇāmaḥ sthairyamucyate || 9 ||

tasyaiva phalamāha —
tasya cetaso niruktānnirodhasaṃskārāt praśāntavāhitā bhavati | parihṛtavikṣepatayā sadṛśapravāhapariṇāmi cittaṃ bhavatītyarthaḥ || 10 ||

nirodhapariṇāmamabhidhāya samādhipariṇāmamāha —
sarvārthatā calatvānnānāvidhārthagrahaṇaṃ cittasya vikṣepo dharmaḥ | ekasminnevālambane sadṛśapariṇāmitaikāgratā | sā'pi cittasya dharmaḥ | tayoryathākramaṃ kṣayodayau sarvārthatālakṣaṇasya dharmasya kṣayo'tyantābhibhava ekāgratālakṣaṇasya dharmasya prādurbhāvo'bhivyaktiścittasyodriktasattvasyānvayitayā'vasthānaṃ samādhipariṇāma ityucyate | pūrvasmāt pariṇāmādasyāyaṃ viśeṣaḥ — tatra saṃskāralakṣaṇayoḥ dharmayorabhibhavaprādurbhāvau pūrvasya vyutthānasaṃskārarūpasya nyagbhāva uttarasya nirodhasaṃskārarūpasyodbhavo'nabhibhūtatvenāvasthānam | iha tu kṣayodayāviti sarvātmatārūpasya vikṣepasyātyantatiraskārādanutpattiratīte'dhvani praveśaḥ kṣaya ekāgratālakṣaṇasya dharmasyodbhavo vartamāne'dhvani prakaṭatvam || 11 ||

tṛtīyamekāgratāpariṇāmamāha —
samāhitasyaiva cittasyaikapratyayo vṛttiviśeṣaḥ śānto'tītamadhvānaṃ praviṣṭaḥ | aparastūdito vartamāne'dhvani sphuritaḥ | dvāvapi samāhitacittatvena tulyāvekarūpālambanatvena sadṛśau pratyayau | ubhayatrāpi samāhitasyaiva cittasyānvayitvenāvasthānam | sa ekāgratāpariṇāma ityucyate || 12 ||

cittapariṇāmoktaṃ rūpamanyatrāpyatidiśannāha —
etena trividhenoktena cittapariṇāmena bhūteṣu sthūlasūkṣmeṣvindriyeṣu buddhikarmāntaḥkaraṇabhedenāvasthiteṣu dharmalakṣaṇāvasthābhedena trividhaḥ pariṇāmo vyākhyāto'vagantavyaḥ | avasthitasya dharmiṇaḥ pūrvadharmanivṛttau dharmāntarāpattirdharmapariṇāmaḥ | yathā — mṛllakṣaṇasya dharmiṇaḥ piṇḍarūpadharmaparityāgena ghaṭarūpadharmāntarasvīkāro dharmapariṇāma ityucyate | lakṣṇapariṇāmo yathā — tasyaiva ghaṭasyānāgatādhvaparityāgena vartamānādhvasvīkāraḥ | tatparityāgenātītādhvaparigrahaḥ | avasthāpariṇāmo yathā — tasyaiva ghaṭasya prathamadvitīyayoḥ sadṛśayoḥ kālalakṣaṇayoranvayitvena | yataśca guṇavṛttirnā'pariṇamyamānā kṣaṇamapyasti || 13 ||

nanu ko'yaṃ dharmītyāśaṅkya dharmiṇo lakṣaṇamāha —
śāntā ye kṛtasvasvavyāpārā atīte'dhvani anupraviṣṭāḥ | uditā ya anāgatamadhvānaṃ parityajya vartamāne'dhvani svavyāpāraṃ kurvanti | avyapadeśyā ye śaktirūpeṇa sthitā vyapadeṣṭuṃ na śakyante | teṣāṃ yathāsvaṃ sarvātmakatvamityevamādayo niyatakāryakāraṇarūpayogyatayāvacchinnā śaktireveha dharmaśabdenābhidhīyate | taṃ trividhamapi dharmaṃ yo'nupatatyanuvartate'nvayitvena svīkaroti sa śāntoditāvyapadeśyadharmānupātī dharmītyucyate | yathā — suvarṇaṃ rucakarūpadharmaparityāgena svastikarūpadharmāntaraparigrahe suvarṇarūpatayā'nuvartamānaṃ teṣu dharmeṣu kathaṃcidbhinneṣu dharmirūpatayā sāmānyātmanā dharmarūpatayā viśeṣātmanā sthitamanvayitvenāvabhāsate || 14 ||

ekasya dharmiṇaḥ kathamaneke pariṇāmā ityāśaṅkāmapanetumāha —
dharmāṇāmuktalakṣaṇānāṃ yaḥ kramastasya yat pratikṣaṇamanyatvaṃ paridṛśyamānaṃ pariṇāmasyoktalakṣaṇasyānyatve nānāvidhatve heturliṅgaṃ jñāpakaṃ bhavati | ayamarthaḥ — yo'yaṃ niyataḥ kramo mṛccūrṇānmṛtpiṇḍastataḥ kapālāni tebhyaśca ghaṭa ityevaṃ kramarūpaḥ paridṛśyamānaḥ pariṇāmasyā'nyatvamāvedayati | tasminneva dharmiṇi yo lakṣaṇapariṇāmasyā'vasthāpariṇāmasya ca kramaḥ so'pyanenaiva nyāyena pariṇāmānyatve gamako'vagantavyaḥ | sarva eva bhāvā niyatenaiva krameṇa pratikṣaṇaṃ pariṇamyamānāḥ paridṛśyante | ataḥ siddhaṃ kramānyatvāt pariṇāmānyatvam | sarveṣāṃ cittādīnāṃ pariṇamamānānāṃ keciddharmāḥ pratyakṣeṇaivopalabhyante | yathā sukhādayaḥ saṃsthānādayaśca | kecidekāntenānumānagamyāḥ | yathā dharmasaṃskāraśaktiprabhṛtayaḥ | dharmiṇaśca bhinnābhinnarūpatayā sarvatrānugamaḥ || 15 ||

idānīmuktasya saṃyamasya viṣayapradarśanadvāreṇa siddhīḥ pratipādayitumāha —
dharmalakṣaṇāvasthābhedena yat pariṇāmatrayamuktaṃ tatra saṃyamāt tasmin viṣaye pūrvoktasaṃyamasya karaṇādatītānāgatajñānaṃ yoginaḥ samādherbhavati | idamatra tātparyam — asmin dharmiṇyayaṃ dharma idaṃ lakṣaṇamiyamavasthā cā'nāgatādadhvanaḥ sametya vartamāne'dhvani svavyāpāraṃ vidhāyātītamadhvānaṃ praviśatītyevaṃ parihṛtavikṣepatayā yadā saṃyamaṃ karoti tadā yatkiṃcidanutpannamatikrāntaṃ vā tat sarvaṃ yogī jānāti | yataścittasya śuddhasattvaprakāśarūpatvāt sarvārthagrahaṇasāmarthyamavidyādibhirvikṣepairapakriyate | yadā tu taistairupāyairvikṣepāḥ parihriyante tadā nivṛttamalasyevādarśasya sarvārthagrahaṇasāmarthyamekāgratābalādāvirbhavati || 16 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
śabdaḥ śrotrendriyagrāhyo niyatakramavarṇātmā niyataikārthapratipattyavacchinnaḥ | yadi vā kramarahitasphoṭātmā śāstrasaṃskṛtabuddhigrāhyaḥ [pā0 dhvanisaṃskṛtabuddhigrāhyaḥ]| ubhayathā'pi padarūpo vākyarūpaśca tayorekārthapratipattau sāmarthyāt | artho jātiguṇakriyādiḥ | pratyayo jñānaṃ viṣayākārā buddhivṛttiḥ | eṣāṃ śabdārthajñānānāṃ vyavahāre itaretarādhyāsādbhinnānāmapi buddhyekarūpatāsampādanāt saṃkīrṇatvam | tathāhi — gāmānayetyukte kaścidgolakṣaṇamarthaṃ gotvajātyavacchinnaṃ sāsnādimat piṇḍarūpaṃ śabdaṃ ca tadvācakaṃ jñānaṃ ca tadgrāhakamabhedenaivādhyavasyati na tvasya gośabdo vācako'yaṃ gośabdasya vācyastayoridaṃ grāhakaṃ jñānamiti bhedena vyavaharati | tathāhi — ko'yamarthaḥ ko'yaṃ śabdaḥ kimidaṃ jñānamiti pṛṣṭaḥ sarvatraikarūpamevottaraṃ dadāti gauriti | sa yadyekarūpatāṃ na pratipadyate kathamekarūpamuttaraṃ prayacchati | evaṃ tasminnavasthite yo'yaṃ [pā0 ekasmin viṣaye yo'yam | etasmin sthite yo'yam vā] pravibhāga idaṃ śabdasya tattvaṃ yadvācakatvaṃ nāma idamarthasya yadvācyatvamidaṃ jñānasya yat prakāśakatvamiti pravibhāgaṃ vidhāya tasmin pravibhāge yaḥ saṃyamaṃ karoti tasya sarveṣāṃ bhūtānāṃ mṛgapakṣisarīsṛpādīnāṃ yadrutaṃ yaḥ śabdastatra jñānamutpadyate | anenaivābhiprāyeṇa tena prāṇināyaṃ śabdaḥ samuccārita iti sarvaṃ jānāti || 17 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
dvividhāścittasya vāsanārūpāḥ saṃskārāḥ | kecit smṛtimātrotpādanaphalāḥ kecijjātyāyurbhogalakṣaṇā vipākahetavo yathā dharmādharmākhyāḥ | teṣu saṃskāreṣu yadā saṃyamaṃ karoti evaṃ mayā so'rtho'nubhūta evaṃ mayā sā kriyā niṣpāditeti pūrvavṛttamanusandadhāno bhāvayanneva prabodhakamantareṇodbuddhasaṃskāraḥ sarvamatītaṃ smarati | krameṇa sākṣātkṛteṣūdbuddheṣu saṃskāreṣu pūrvajanmāntarānubhūtānapi jātyādīn pratyakṣeṇa paśyati || 18 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
pratyayasya paracittasya kenacinmukharāgādinā liṅgena gṛhītasya yadā saṃyamaṃ karoti tadā parakīyacittasya jñānamutpadyate sarāgamasya cittaṃ vītarāgaṃ veti | paracittagatān sarvānapi dharmān jānātītyarthaḥ || 19 ||

asyaiva paracittajñānasya viśeṣajñānamāha —
tasya parasya yaccittaṃ tat sālambanaṃ svakīyenā''lambanena sahitaṃ na śakyate jñātumālambanasya kenacilliṅgenāviṣayīkṛtatvāt | liṅgāddhi cittamātraṃ parasyāvagataṃ na tu nīlaviṣayamasya cittaṃ pītaviṣayamiti vā | yacca na gṛhītaṃ tatra saṃyamasya kartumaśakyatvānna bhavati paracittasya yo viṣayastatra jñānam | tasmāt parakīyacittaṃ nā''lambanasahitaṃ gṛhyate tasyā''lambanasyā'gṛhītatvāt | cittadharmāḥ punargṛhyanta eva | yadā tu kimanenā''lambitamiti praṇidhānaṃ karoti tadā tatsaṃyamāttadviṣayamapi jñānamutpadyata eva || 20 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
kāyaḥ śarīraṃ tasya rūpaṃ cakṣurgrāhyo guṇastasminnastyasmin kāye rūpamiti saṃyamāttasya rūpasya cakṣurgrāhyatvarūpā yā śaktistasyāḥ stambhe bhāvanāvaśāt pratibandhe cakṣuṣprakāśāsaṃyoge cakṣuṣaḥ prakāśaḥ sattvadharmastasyā'saṃyoge tadgrahaṇavyāpārābhāve yogino'ntardhānaṃ bhavati | na kenacidasau dṛśyata ityarthaḥ | etenaiva rūpāntardhānopāyapradarśanena śabdādīnāṃ śrotrādigrāhyāṇāmantardhānamuktaṃ veditavyam || 21 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
āyurvipākaṃ yat pūrvakṛtaṃ karma taddviprakāraṃ sopakramaṃ nirupakramaṃ ca | tatra sopakramaṃ yat phalajananāya sahopakrameṇa kāryakaraṇābhimukhyena vartate yathoṣṇapradeśe prasāritārdravāsaḥ śīghrameva śuṣyati | uktaviparītaṃ nirupakramaṃ yathā tadevārdravāsaḥ saṃvartitamanuṣṇapradeśe cireṇa śuṣyati | tasmin dvividhe karmaṇi yaḥ saṃyamaṃ karoti — kiṃ mama karma śīghravipākaṃ ciravipākaṃ vā — evaṃ dhyānadārḍhyādaparāntajñānamasyotpadyate | aparāntaḥ śarīraviyogastasmiñjñānamamuṣmin kāle'muṣmin deśe mama śarīraviyogo bhaviṣyatīti niḥsaṃśayaṃ jānāti | ariṣṭebhyo vā | ariṣṭāni trividhāni | ādhyātmikādhibhautikādhidaivikāni | tatrādhyātmikāni — pihitakaraṇaḥ koṣṭhyasya vāyorghoṣaṃ na śṛṇotītyevamādīni | ādhibhautikāni — akasmādvikṛtapuruṣadarśanādīni | ādhidaivikāni — akāṇḍa eva draṣṭumaśakyāni svargādipadārthadarśanādīni | tebhyaḥ śarīraviyogakālaṃ jānāti | yadyapyayogināmapyariṣṭebhyaḥ prāyeṇa tajjñānamutpadyate tathāpi teṣāṃ sāmānyākāreṇa tat saṃśayarūpaṃ yogināṃ punarniyatadeśakālatayā pratyakṣavadavyabhicāri || 22 ||

parikarmaniṣpāditāḥ siddhīḥ pratipādayitumāha —
maitrīkaruṇāmuditopekṣāsu yo vihitasaṃyamastadbalāni tāsāṃ maitryādīnāṃ sambandhīni prādurbhavanti | maitrīkaruṇāmuditopekṣāstathā'sya prakarṣaṃ gacchanti yathā sarvasya mitratvādikamay'ṃ pratipadyate || 23 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
hastyādisambandhiṣu baleṣu kṛtasaṃyamasya tadbalāni hastyādibalānyāvirbhavanti | tadayamarthaḥ — yasmin hastibale vāyuvege siṃhavīrye vā tanmayībhāvenā'yaṃ saṃyamaṃ karoti tattatsāmarthyayuktaṃ sattvamasya [ pā0 tattatsāmarthyayuktatvātsarvamasya ] prādurbhavatītyarthaḥ || 24 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
pravṛttirviṣayavatī jyotiṣmatī ca prāguktā (1|35-36)| tasyā ya ālokaḥ sāttvikaprakāśastasya nikhileṣu viṣayeṣu nyāsāt tadvāsitānāṃ viṣayāṇāṃ bhāvanātaḥ santaḥkaraṇeṣu indriyeṣu ca prakṛṣṭaśaktimāpanneṣu susūkṣmasya paramāṇvādervyavahitasya bhūmyantargatasya nidhānāderviprakṛṣṭasya mervaparapārśvavartino rasāyanāderjñānamutpadyate || 25 ||

etatsamānavṛttāntasiddhyantaramāha —
sūrye prakāśamaye yaḥ saṃyamaḥ karoti tasya saptasu bhūrbhuvaḥsvaḥprabhṛtiṣu lokeṣu yāni bhuvanāni tattatsanniveśabhāñji purāṇi [pā0 sthānāni] teṣu yathāvadasya jñānamutpadyate | pūrvasmin sūtre sāttvikaprakāśa ālambanatayoktaḥ | iha tu bhautika iti viśeṣaḥ || 26 ||

bhautikaprakāśāntarālambanadvāreṇa siddhyantaramāha —
tārāṇāṃ jyotiṣāṃ yo vyūho viśiṣṭaḥ sanniveśastasya candre kṛtasaṃyamasya jñānamutpadyate | sūryaprakāśena hatatejaskatvāttārāṇāṃ sūryasaṃyamāttajjñānaṃ na śakyaṃ bhavitumarhatīti pṛthagupāyo'bhihitaḥ || 27 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
dhruve niścale jyotiṣāṃ pradhāne kṛtasaṃyamasya tāsāṃ tārāṇāṃ yā gatiḥ pratyekaṃ niyatakālā niyatadeśā ca tasyā jñānamutpadyate — iyaṃ tārā'yaṃ graha iyatā kālenā'muṃ rāśimidaṃ nakṣatraṃ yāsyatīti sarvaṃ jānāti | idaṃ kālajñānasya phalamityuktaṃ bhavati || 28 ||

bāhyāḥ siddhīḥ pratipādyā'ntarāḥ siddhīḥ pratipādayitumupakramate —
śarīramadhyavarti nābhisaṃjñakaṃ yat ṣoḍaśāraṃ cakraṃ tasmin kṛtasaṃyamasya yoginaḥ kāyagato yo'sau vyūho viśiṣṭarasamaladhātunāḍyādīnāmavasthānaṃ tatra jñānamutpadyate | idamuktaṃ bhavati — nābhicakraṃ śarīramadhyavarti sarvataḥ prasṛtānāṃ nāḍyādīnāṃ mūlabhūtam | atastatra kṛtāvadhānasya samagrasanniveśo yathāvadābhāti || 29 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
kaṇṭhe gale kūpaḥ kaṇṭhakūpaḥ | jihvāmūle jihvātantoradhastāt kūpa iva kūpo gartākārapradeśaḥ prāṇāderyatsamparkāt kṣutpipāsādayaḥ prādurbhavanti tasmin kṛtasaṃyamasya yoginaḥ kṣutpipāsādayo nivartante | ghaṇṭikādhastāt srotasā dhāryamāṇe tasmin bhāvite bhavatyevaṃvidhā siddhiḥ || 30 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
kaṇṭhakūpasyādhastādyā kūrmākhyā nāḍī tasyāṃ kṛtasaṃyamasya cetasaḥ sthairyamutpadyate | tatsthānamanupraviṣṭasya cañcalatā na bhavatītyarthaḥ | yadi vā kāyasya sthairyamutpadyate na kenacit spandayituṃ śakyata ityarthaḥ || 31 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
śiraḥkapāle brahmarandhrākhye chidre prakāśādhāratvājjyotiṣi | yathā gṛhābhyantarasthasya maṇeḥ prasarantī prabhā kuñcitākāreva sarvapradeśe saṃghaṭate tathā hṛdayasthaḥ sāttvikaḥ prakāśaḥ prasṛtastatra sampiṇḍitatvaṃ bhajate | tatra kṛtasaṃyamasya ye dyāvāpṛthivyorantarālavartinaḥ siddhā divyāḥ puruṣāsteṣāmitaraprāṇibhiradṛśyānām tasya darśanaṃ bhavati | tān paśyati taiśca sa sambhāṣata ityarthaḥ || 32 ||

sarvajñatva upāyamāha —
nimittānapekṣaṃ manomātrajanyamavisaṃvādakaṃ drāgutpadyamānaṃ [pā0 prāgutpadyamānaṃ] jñānaṃ pratibhā | tasyāṃ saṃyame kriyamāṇe prātibhaṃ vivekakhyāteḥ pūrvabhāvi tārakaṃ jñānamudeti | yathodeṣyataḥ savituḥ pūrvaṃ prabhā prādurbhavati tadvadvivekakhyāteḥ pūrvaṃ tārakaṃ sarvaviṣayaṃ jñānamutpadyate | tasmin sati saṃyamāntarānapekṣaḥ sarvaṃ jānātītyarthaḥ || 33 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
hṛdayaṃ śarīrasya pradeśaviśeṣaḥ | tasminnadhomukhasvalpapuṇḍarīkābhyantare'ntaḥkaraṇasattvasya sthānam | tatra kṛtasaṃyamasya svaparacittajñānamutpadyate | svacittagatāḥ sarvā vāsanāḥ paracittagatāṃśca rāgādīñjānātītyarthaḥ || 34 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
sattvaṃ prakāśasukhātmakaḥ prādhānikaḥ pariṇāmaviśeṣaḥ | puruṣo bhoktā'dhiṣṭhātṛrūpaḥ | tayoratyantāsaṃkīrṇayorbhogyabhoktṛrūpatvādacetanacetanatvācca bhinnayoryaḥ pratyayasyāviśeṣo bhedenāpratibhāsanaṃ tasmāt sattvasyaiva kartṛtāpratyayena yā sukhaduḥkhasaṃvit sa bhogaḥ | sattvasya svārthanairapekṣyeṇa parārthaḥ puruṣārthanimittaḥ | tasmādanyo yaḥ svārthaḥ puruṣasvarūpamātrālambanaḥ parityaktāhaṃkārasattve yā cicchāyāsaṃkrāntistatra kṛtasaṃyamasya puruṣaviṣayaṃ jñānamutpadyate | tatra tadevaṃ rūpaṃ svālambanaṃ jñānaṃ sattvaniṣṭhaṃ purūṣo [pā0 sattvaniṣṭhaḥ puruṣaḥ] jānātītyarthaḥ | na punaḥ puruṣo jñātā jñānasya viṣayabhāvamāpadyate jñeyatvāpatterjñātṛjñeyatvayoratyantavirodhāt || 35 ||

asyaiva saṃyamasya phalamāha —
tataḥ puruṣasaṃyamādabhyasyamānādvyutthitasyāpi jñānāni jāyante | tatra prātibhaṃ pūrvoktaṃ jñānaṃ tasyāvirbhavanāt sūkṣmādikamarthaṃ paśyati | śrāvaṇaṃ śrotrendriyajaṃ jñānaṃ tasmācca prakṛṣṭaṃ divyaṃ śabdaṃ jānāti | vedanā sparśendriyajaṃ jñānaṃ vedyate'nayeti kṛtvā tāntrikyā saṃjñayā vyavahriyate | tasmāddivyasparśaviṣayaṃ jñānaṃ samupajāyate | ādarśaścakṣurindriyajaṃ jñānam | ā samantāddṛśyate'nubhūyate rūpamaneneti kṛtvā tasya prakarṣāddivyaṃ rūpajñānamutpadyate | āsvādo rasanendriyajaṃ jñānam | āsvādyate'neneti kṛtvā tasmin prakṛṣṭe divye rase saṃvidupajāyate | vārtā gandhasaṃvit | vṛttiśabdena tāntrikyā paribhāṣayā ghrāṇendriyamucyate | vartate gandhaviṣaye iti vṛtterghrāṇendriyājjātā vārtā gandhasaṃvit | tasyāṃ prakṛṣyamānāyāṃ divyagandho'nubhūyate || 36 ||

eteṣāṃ phalaviśeṣāṇāṃ viṣayavibhāgamāha —
te prākpratipāditāḥ phalaviśeṣāḥ samādheḥ prakarṣe gacchata upasargā upadravā vighnāḥ | tatra harṣasmayādikaraṇena [ pā0 harṣavismayādikaraṇena ] samādhiḥ śithilībhavati | vyutthāne tu punarvyavahāradaśāyāṃ viśiṣṭaphaladāyakatvāt siddhayo bhavanti || 37 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
vyāpakatvādātmacittayorniyatakarmavaśādeva śarīrāntargatayoreva bhoktṛbhogyabhāvena yat saṃvedanamupajāyate sa eva śarīrabandha ityucyate | tadyadā samādhivaśādbandhakāraṇaṃ dharmādharmākhyaṃ śithilaṃ bhavati tānavamāpadyate | cittasya ca yo'sau pracāro hṛdayapraveśādindriyadvāreṇa viṣayābhimukhyena prasarastasya saṃvedanaṃ jñānam — iyaṃ cittavahā nāḍī | anayā cittaṃ vahati | iyaṃ ca prāṇādivahābhyo [ pā0 rasaprāṇādivahābhyo ] nāḍībhyo vilakṣaṇeti — svaparaśarīrayoryadā saṃcāraṃ jānāti tadā parakīyaṃ mṛtaṃ jīvaccharīraṃ vā cittasañcāradvāreṇa praviśati | cittaṃ ca paraśarīre praviśadindriyāṇyapyanuvartante madhukararājamiva makṣikāḥ | atha paraśarīrapraviṣṭo yogī svaśārīravat tena sarvaṃ vyavaharati | yato vyāpakayościttapuruṣayorbhogasaṅkoce kāraṇaṃ karma taccet samādhinā kṣiptaṃ tadā svātantryāt sarvatraiva bhoganiṣpattiḥ || 38 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
samastānāmindriyāṇāṃ tuṣajvālāvadyā yugapadutthitā vṛttiḥ sā jīvanaśabdavācyā | tasyāḥ kriyābhedāt prāṇāpānādisaṃjñābhirvyapadeśaḥ | tatra hṛdayānmukhanāsikādvāreṇa vāyoḥ prāyaṇāt prāṇa ityucyate | nābhideśāt pādāṅguṣṭhaparyantamapanayanādapānaḥ | nābhideśaṃ pariveṣṭya samantānnayanāt samānaḥ | kṛkāṭikādeśādāśirovṛtterunnayanādudānaḥ | vyāpya nayanāt sarvaśarīravyāpī vyānaḥ | tatrodānasya saṃyamadvāreṇa jayāditareṣāṃ vāyūnāṃ rodhādūrdhvagatitvena jale mahānadyādau mahati vā kardame tīkṣṇeṣu kaṇṭakeṣu vā na majjatyatilaghutvāt [ pā0 na sajjate |tilaghutvāt ]| tūlapiṇḍavajjalādau majjito'pyudgacchatītyarthaḥ || 39 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
agnimāveṣṭya vyavasthitasya samānākhyasya vāyorjayāt saṃyamena vaśīkārānnirāvaraṇasyāgnerudbhūtattvāttejasā [ pā0 agnerūrdhvatvāt ] prajvalanniva yogī pratibhāti || 40 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
śrotraṃ śabdagrāhakamāhaṃkārikamindriyam | ākāśaṃ vyoma śabdatanmātrakāryam | tayoḥ sambandho deśadeśibhāvalakṣaṇastasmin kṛtasaṃyamasya yogino divyaṃ śrotraṃ pravartate | yugapat sūkṣmavyavahitaviprakṛṣṭaśabdagrahaṇasamarthaṃ bhavatītyarthaḥ || 41 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
kāyaḥ pāñcabhautikaṃ śarīram | tasyākāśenāvakāśadāyakena yaḥ sambandhastatra saṃyamaṃ vidhāya laghuni tūlādau samāpattiṃ tanmayībhāvalakṣaṇāṃ vidhāya prāptātilaghubhāvo yogī prathamaṃ yathāruci jale saṃcaraṇakrameṇorṇanābhatantujālena saṃcaramāṇa ādityaraśmibhiśca viharan yatheṣṭamākāśena gacchati || 42 ||

siddhyantaramāha —
śarīrādbahiryā manasaḥ śarīranairapekṣyeṇa vṛttiḥ sā mahāvidehā nāma vigatāhaṃkārakāryavegā [ pā0 vigataśarīrāhaṃkāradārḍhyadvāreṇa ] ucyate | tatastasyāṃ kṛtāt saṃyamāt prakāśāvaraṇakṣayaḥ sāttvikasya cittasya yaḥ prakāśaḥ tasya yadāvaraṇaṃ kleśakarmādi tasya kṣayaḥ pravilayo bhavati | ayamarthaḥ — śarīrāhaṃkāre sati yā manaso bahirvṛttiḥ sā kalpitetyucyate | yadā punaḥ śarīrādahaṃkārabhāvaṃ parityajya svātantryeṇa manaso vṛttiḥ sā'kalpitā | tasyāṃ saṃyamādyoginaḥ sarve cittamalāḥ kṣīyante || 43 ||

tadevaṃ pūrvāntaviṣayāḥ parāntaviṣayā madhyabhāvāśca siddhīḥ pratipādyā'nantaraṃ bhuvanajñānādirūpā bāhyāḥ kāyavyūhādirūpā ābhyantarāḥ parikarmaniṣpannabhūtāśca maitryādiṣu balānītyevamādyāḥ samādhyupayoginīścāntaḥkaraṇabahiḥkaraṇalakṣaṇendriyabhavāḥ prāṇādivāyubhavāśca siddhīścittadārḍhyāya samādheścāśvāsotpattaye pratipādyedānīṃ svadarśanopayogisabījanirbījasamādhisiddhaye vividhopāyapradarśanāyāha —
pañcānāṃ pṛthivyādīnāṃ bhūtānāṃ ye pañcā'vasthāviśeṣarūpā dharmāḥ sthūlatvādayastatra kṛtasaṃyamasya bhūtajayo bhavati | bhūtānyasya vaśyāni bhavantītyarthaḥ | tathā hi — bhūtānāṃ paridṛśyamānaṃ viśiṣṭākāravat sthūlarūpam | svarūpapañcaiṣāṃ yathākramaṃ kāryaṃ gandhasnehoṣṇatāpreraṇāvakāśadānalakṣaṇam | sūkṣmaṃ ca yathākramaṃ bhūtānāṃ kāraṇatvena vyavasthitāni gandhāditanmātrāṇi | anvayino guṇāḥ prakāśapravṛttisthitirūpatayā sarvatraivā'nvayitvena samupalabhyante | arthavattvaṃ teṣu eva guṇeṣu bhogāpavargasampādanākhyā śaktiḥ | tadevaṃ bhūteṣu pañcasu uktadharmalakṣaṇāvasthābhinneṣu pratyavasthaṃ saṃyamaṃ kurvan yogī bhūtajayī bhavati | tadyathā — prathamaṃ sthūlarūpe saṃyamaṃ vidhāya tadanu svarūpe ityevaṃ krameṇa tasya kṛtasaṃyamasya saṃkalpānuvidhāyinyo vatsānusāriṇya iva gāvo bhūtaprakṛtayo bhavantītyarthaḥ || 44 ||

ta ete'ṇimādyāḥ samādhyupayogino bhūtajayādyoginaḥ prādurbhavanti | yathā paramāṇutvaṃ prāpto vajrādīnāmapyantaḥ praviśati | evaṃ sarvatra yojyam | ete'ṇimādayo'ṣṭau guṇā mahāsiddhaya ucyante | kāyasampadvakṣyamāṇā (3|46) tāṃ prāpnoti | taddharmā'nabhighātaśca tasya kāyasya ye dharmā rūpādayasteṣāmanabhighāto nāśo na kutaścidbhavati nāsya rūpamagnirdahati na vāyuḥ śoṣayatītyādi yojyam || 45 ||

kāyasampadamāha —
rūpalāvaṇyabalāni prasiddhāni | vajrasaṃhananatvaṃ vajravat kaṭhinā saṃhatirasya śarīre bhavatītyarthaḥ | iti kāyasya āvirbhūtaguṇasampat || 46 ||

evaṃ bhūtajayamabhidhāya prāptabhūmikāviśeṣasyendriyajayamāha —
grahaṇamindriyāṇāṃ viṣayābhimukhī vṛttiḥ | svarūpaṃ sāmānyena prakāśakatvam | asmitā ahaṃkārānugamaḥ | anvayārthavattve pūrvavat (3|44)| eteṣāṃ indriyāṇāmavasthāpañcake pūrvavat saṃyamaṃ kṛtvendriyajayī bhavati || 47 ||

tasya phalamāha —
śarīrasya manovadanuttamagatilābho manojavitvam | kāyanirapekṣāṇāmindriyāṇāṃ vṛttilābho vikaraṇabhāvaḥ | sarvavaśitvaṃ pradhānajayaḥ | etāḥ siddhyayo jitendriyasya prādurbhavanti | tāścāsmin śāstre madhupratīkā ityucyante | yathā madhuna ekadeśo'pi svadata evaṃ pratyekametāḥ siddhayaḥ svadanta iti madhupratīkāḥ || 48 ||

indriyajayamabhidhāyā'ntaḥkaraṇajayamāha —
tasmin buddheḥ sāttvike pariṇāme kṛtasaṃyamasya yā sattvapuruṣayorutpadyate vivekakhyātirguṇānāṃ kartṛtvābhimānaśithilībhāvarūpā tanmāhātmyāt tatraiva sthitasya yoginaḥ sarvādhiṣṭhātṛtvaṃ sarvajñātṛtvaṃ ca samādherbhavati | sarveṣāṃ guṇapariṇāmānāṃ bhāvānāṃ svāmivadākramaṇaṃ sarvabhāvādhiṣṭhātṛtvam | teṣāmeva ca śāntoditāvyapadeśyadharmitvenāvasthitānāṃ yathāvadvivekajñānaṃ sarvajñātṛtvam | eṣāṃ cāsmiñchāstre parasyāṃ vaśīkārasaṃjñāyāṃ prāptāyāṃ viśokā nāma siddhirityucyate || 49 ||

krameṇa bhūmikāntaramāha —
tasyāmapi viśokāyāṃ siddhau yadā vairāgyamutpadyate yoginastadā tasmāddoṣāṇāṃ rāgādīnāṃ yadbījamavidyādayastasya kṣaye nirmūlane kaivalyamātyantikī duḥkhanivṛttiḥ puruṣasya guṇānāmadhikāraparisamāptau svarūpapratiṣṭhatvam [ pā0 svarūpaniṣṭhatvam ] || 50 ||

tasminneva samādhau sthityupāyamāha —
catvāro yogino bhavanti | tatrābhyāsavān pravṛttamātrajyotiḥ prathamaḥ | ṛtambharaprajño dvitīyaḥ | bhūtendriyajayī tṛtīyaḥ | atikrāntabhāvanīyaścaturthaḥ | tatra caturthasya samādheḥ prāptasaptavidhabhūmiprāntaprajño bhavati | ṛtambharaprajñasya dvitīyāṃ madhumatīsaṃjñāṃ bhūmikāṃ sākṣātkurvataḥ svāmino devā upanimantrayitāro bhavanti | divyastrīrasāyanādikam [divyastrīvasanādikam ] upaḍhaukayantīti tasminnupanimantraṇe nā'nena saṅgaḥ kartavyo nāpi smayaḥ | saṅgatikaraṇe punarviṣayabhoge patati smayakaraṇe kṛtakṛtyamātmānaṃ manyamāno na samādhāvutsahate | ataḥ saṅgasmayayostena varjanaṃ kartavyam || 51 ||

asyāmeva phalabhūtāyāṃ vivekakhyātau pūrvoktasaṃyamavyatiriktamupāyāntaramāha —
kṣaṇaḥ sarvāntyaḥ kālāvayavo yasya kalāḥ prabhavituṃ na śakyante | tathāvidhānāṃ kālakṣaṇānāṃ yaḥ kramaḥ paurvāparyeṇa pariṇāmastatra saṃyamāt prāguktaṃ vivekajaṃ jñānamutpadyate | ayamarthaḥ — ayaṃ kālakṣaṇo'muṣmāt kālakṣaṇāduttaro'yamasmāt pūrva ityevaṃvidhe krame kṛtasaṃyamasyātyantasūkṣme'pi kṣaṇakrame yadā bhavati sākṣātkārastadā'nyadapi sūkṣmaṃ mahadādi sākṣātkarotīti vivekajñānotpattiḥ || 52 ||

asyaiva saṃyamasya viṣayavivekopakṣepaṇāyāha —
padārthānāṃ bhedahetavo jātilakṣaṇadeśā bhavanti | kvacidbhedaheturjātiḥ | yathā gauriyaṃ mahiṣīyamiti | jātyā tulyayorlakṣaṇaṃ bhedahetuḥ | iyaṃ karbureyamaruṇeti | jātyā lakṣaṇenābhinnayorbhedaheturdeśo drṛṣṭaḥ | yathā tulyapramāṇayorāmalakayorbhinnadeśasthitayoḥ | yatra punarbhedo'vadhārayituṃ na śakyate yathā ekadeśasthitayoḥ śuklayoḥ pārthivayoḥ paramāṇvostathāvidhe viṣaye bhedāya kṛtasaṃyamasya bhedena jñānamutpadyate tadā tadabhyāsāt sūkṣmāṇyapi tattvāni bhedena pratipadyate | etaduktaṃ bhavati — yatra kenacidupāyena bhedo nāvadhārayituṃ śakyastatra saṃyamādbhavatyeva bhedapratipattiḥ || 53 ||

sūkṣmāṇāṃ tattvānāmuktasya vivekajanyajñānasya saṃjñāviṣayasvābhāvyaṃ vyākhyātumāha —
uktasaṃyamabalādevā'ntyāyāṃ bhūmikāyāmutpannaṃ jñānaṃ tārakamiti tārayatyagādhāt saṃsārasāgarādyoginamityānvarthikyā saṃjñayā tārakamityucyate | asya viṣayamāha — sarvaviṣayamiti | sarvāṇi tattvāni mahadādīni viṣayo'syeti sarvaviṣayam | svabhāvaścāsya sarvathāviṣayatvam | sarvābhiravasthābhiḥ sthūlasūkṣmādibhedena taistaiḥ pariṇāmaiḥ sarveṇa prakāreṇā'vasthitāni tattvāni viṣayo'syeti sarvathāviṣayam | svabhāvāntaramāha — akramaṃ ceti | niḥśeṣanānāvasthāpariṇatasyātmakabhāvagrahaṇenāsya [pā0 niḥśeṣanānā'vasthāpariṇatadvitryātmakabhāvagrahaṇe nā'sya] kramo vidyata ityakramam | sarvaṃ karatalāmalakavadyugapat paśyatītyarthaḥ || 54 ||

asmācca vivekajāt tārakākhyājjñānāt kiṃ bhavatītyāha —
sattvapuruṣāvuktalakṣaṇau (2|6, 2|18, 2|20)| tayoḥ śuddhisāmye kaivalyam | sattvasya sarvakartṛtvābhimānanivṛtyā svakāraṇānupraveśaḥ śuddhiḥ | puruṣasya śuddhirupacaritabhogābhāva iti dvayoḥ samānāyāṃ śuddhau puruṣasya kaivalyamutpadyate | mokṣo bhavatītyarthaḥ || 55 ||



tadevamantaraṅgaṃ yogāṅgatrayamabhidhāya tasya ca saṃyamasaṃjñāṃ kṛtvā saṃyamasya viṣayapradarśanārthaṃ pariṇāmatrayamupapādya saṃyamabalotpadyamānāḥ pūrvāntaparāntamadhyabhavāḥ siddhīrupadarśya samādhyabhyāsopapattaye [pā0 samādhyāśvāsotpattaye] bāhyā bhuvanajñānādirūpā ābhyantarāśca kāyavyūhajñānādirūpāḥ pradarśya samādhyupayogāyendriyaprāṇajayādipūrvikāḥ paramapuruṣārthasiddhaye yathākramamavasthāsahitabhūtajayendriyasattvajayodbhavāśca vyākhyāya vivekajñānopapattaye tāṃstānupāyānupanyasya tārakasya sarvasamādhyavasthāparyantabhavasya svarūpamabhidhāya tatsamāpatteḥ kṛtādhikārasya cittasattvasya svakāraṇānupraveśāt kaivalyamutpadyata ityabhihitamiti nirṇīto vibhūtipādastṛtīyaḥ |

iti dhāreśvarabhojadevaviracitāyāṃ rājamārtaṇḍābhidhāyāṃ pātañjalavṛttau vibhūtipādastṛtīyaḥ |

atha kaivalyapādaḥ yadājñayaiva kaivalyaṃ vinopāyaiḥ prajāyate | tamekamajamīśānaṃ cidānandamayaṃ stumaḥ ||

idānīṃ vipratipattisamutthabhrāntinirākaraṇena yuktyā kaivalyasvarūpajñāpanāya [pā0 jñānāya] kaivalyapādo'yamārabhyate | tatra yāḥ pūrvamuktāḥ siddhayastāsāṃ nānāvidhajanmādikāraṇapratipādanadvāreṇaivaṃ bodhayati — madīyā yā etāḥ siddhayastāḥ sarvāḥ pūrvajanmābhyastasamādhibalājjanmādinimittamātratvenā''śritya pravartante | tataścānekabhavasādhyasya samādherna kṣatirastītyāśvāsotpādanāya samādhisiddheśca prādhānyakhyāpanārthaṃ kaivalyopayogārthaṃ cāha —
kāścana janmanimittā eva siddhayo yathā pakṣyādīnāmākāśagamanādayaḥ | yathā vā kapilamaharṣiprabhṛtīnāṃ janmasamanantaramevopajāyamānā jñānādayaḥ sāṃsiddhikā guṇāḥ | oṣadhisiddhayo yathā pāradādirasāyanādyupayogāt | mantrasiddhiryathā mantrajapāt keṣāṃcidākāśagamanādiḥ | tapaḥsiddhiryathā viśvāmitrādīnām | samādhisiddhiḥ prākpratipāditā | etāḥ siddhayaḥ pūrvajanmakṣayitakleśānāmevopajāyante | tasmāt samādhisiddhāvivā'nyāsāṃ siddhīnāṃ samādhireva janmāntarābhyastaḥ kāraṇm | mantrādīni nimittamātrāṇi || 1 ||

nanu nandīśvarādikānāṃ jātyādipariṇāmo'sminneva janmani dṛśyate | tat kathaṃ janmāntarābhyastasya samādheḥ kāraṇatvamucyata ityāśaṅkyāha —
yo'yamihaiva janmani nandīśvarādīnāṃ jātyādipariṇāmaḥ sa prakṛtyāpūrāt | pāścāttyā eva hi prakṛtayo'muṣmiñjanmani vikārānāpūrayanti jātyantarākāreṇa pariṇamanti || 2 ||

nanu dharmādharmādayastatra kriyamānā upalabhyante | tat kathaṃ prakṛtīnāmāpūrakatvam ityāha —
nimittaṃ dharmādi | tat prakṛtīnāmarthāntarapariṇāme na prayojakam | na hi kāryeṇa kāraṇaṃ pravartate | kutra tarhi tasya dharmādervyāpāra ityāha — varaṇabhedastu tataḥ kṣetrikavat | tatastasmādanuṣṭhīyamānāddharmādvaraṇamāvaraṇakamadharmādi tasyaiva virodhitvādbhedaḥ kṣayaḥ kriyate | tasmin pratibandhake kṣīṇe prakṛtayaḥ svayamabhimatakāryāya prabhavanti | dṛṣṭāntamāha — kṣetrikavat | yathā kṣetrikaḥ kṛṣībalaḥ kedārāt kedārāntaraṃ jalaṃ ninīṣurjalapratibandhakāvaraṇabhedamātraṃ karoti | tasmin bhinne jalaṃ svayameva prasaradrūpaṃ pariṇāmaṃ gṛhṇāti na tu jalaprasaraṇe tasya kaścit prayatnaḥ | evaṃ dharmāderboddhavyam || 3 ||

yadā sākṣātkṛtatattvasya yogino yugapat karmaphalabhogāyā''tmīyaniratiśayavibhūtyanubhavād yugapadanekaśarīranirmitsā jāyate tadā kutastāni cittāni prabhavantītyāha —
yoginaḥ svayaṃ nirmiteṣu kāyeṣu yāni cittāni tāni mūlakāraṇādasmitāmātrādeva tadicchayā prasaranti | agnervisphuliṅgā iva yugapat pariṇamanti || 4 ||

nanu bahūnāṃ cittānāṃ bhinnābhiprāyatvānnaikakāryakartṛtvaṃ syādityāha —
teṣāmanekeṣāṃ cetasāṃ pravṛttibhede vyāpāranānātva eakaṃ yoginaścittaṃ prayojakaṃ prerakamadhiṣṭhātṛtvena | tena na bhinnamatatvam | ayamarthaḥ — yathātmīyaśarīre manaścakṣuḥpāṇyādīni yathecchaṃ prerayatyadhiṣṭhātṛtvenaievaṃ kāyāntareṣvapīti || 5 ||

janmādiprabhavatvāt siddhīnāṃ cittamapi tatprabhavaṃ pañcavidhameva | ato janmādiprabhavāccittāt samādhiprabhavasya cittasya vailakṣaṇyamāha —
dhyānajaṃ samādhijaṃ yaccittaṃ tat pañcasu madhye'nāśayaṃ karmavāsanārahitamityarthaḥ || 6 ||

yathetaracittebhyo yoginaścittaṃ vilakṣaṇaṃ kleśādirahitaṃ tathā karmāpi vilakṣaṇamityāha —
śubhaphaladaṃ karma yāgādi śuklam | aśubhaphaladaṃ brahmahatyādi kṛṣṇam | ubhayasaṃkīrṇaṃ śuklakṛṣṇam | tatra śuklaṃ karma vicakṣaṇānāṃ dānatapaḥsvādhyāyādimatāṃ puruṣāṇām | kṛṣṇaṃ karma dānavānām [ nārakānām ]| śuklakṛṣṇaṃ manuṣyāṇām | yogināntu saṃnyāsavatāṃ trividhakarmaviparītaṃ yat phalatyāgānusandhānenaivānuṣṭhānānna kiñcit phalamārabhate || 7 ||

asyaiva karmaṇaḥ phalamāha —
iha hi dvividhā karmavāsanāḥ smṛtimātraphalā jātyāyurbhogaphalāśca | tatra jātyāyurbhogaphalā ekānekajanmabhavā ityanena pūrvameva (2|12--13) kṛtanirṇayāḥ | yāstu smṛtimātraphalāstāstataḥ karmaṇo yena karmaṇā yādṛk śarīramārabdhaṃ devamanuṣyatiryagādibhedena tasya vipākasyā'nuguṇā anurūpā yā vāsanāstāsāmeva tasmādabhivyaktirvāsanānāṃ bhavati | ayamarthaḥ — yena karmaṇā pūrvaṃ devatādiśarīramārabdhaṃ jātyantaraśatavyavadhānena punastathāvidhasyaiva śarīrasyārambhe tadanurūpā eva smṛtiphalā vāsanāḥ prakaṭībhavanti | lokāntareṣvevārtheṣu tasya smṛtyādayo jāyante | itarāstu satyo'pi avyaktasaṃjñāstiṣṭhanti na tasyāṃ daśāyāṃ nārakādiśarīrodbhavā vāsanā vyaktimāyānti || 8 ||

āsāmeva vāsanānāṃ kāryakāraṇābhāvānupapattimāśaṅkya samarthayitumāha —
iha nānāyoniṣu bhramatāṃ saṃsāriṇāṃ kāṃcidyonimanubhūya yadā yonyantarasahasravyavadhānena punastāmeva yoniṃ pratipadyate tadā tasyāṃ pūrvānubhūtāyāṃ yonau tathāvidhaśarīrādivyañjakāpekṣayā vāsanā yāḥ prakaṭībhūtā āsaṃstāstathāvidhavyañjakābhāvāttirohitāḥ punastathāvidhavyañjakaśarīrādilābhe prakaṭībhavanti | jātideśakālavyavadhāne'pi tāsāṃ svānurūpasmṛtyādiphalasādhana ānantaryaṃ nairantaryam | kutaḥ | smṛtisaṃskārayorekarūpatvāt | tathāhi — anuṣṭhīyamānāt karmaṇaścittasattve vāsanārūpaḥ saṃskāraḥ samutpadyate | sa ca svarganarakādīnāṃ phalānāṃ cāṅkurībhāvaḥ karmaṇāṃ vā yāgādīnāṃ śaktirūpatayā'vasthānam | karturvā tathāvidhabhogyabhoktṛtvarūpaṃ sāmarthyam | saṃskārāt smṛtiḥ smṛteśca sukhaduḥkhopabhogastadanubhavācca punarapi saṃskārasmṛtyādayaḥ | evaṃ ca yasya smṛtisaṃskārādayo bhinnāstasyā''nantaryābhāve durlabhaḥ kāryakāraṇabhāvaḥ | asmākaṃ tu yadānubhava eva saṃskārībhavati saṃskāraśca smṛtirūpatayā pariṇamate tadaikasyaiva cittasyānusandhātṛtvena sthitatvānna kāryakāraṇabhāvo durghaṭaḥ || 9 ||

bhavatvānantaryaṃ kāryakāraṇabhāvaśca vāsanānām yadā tu prathamamevānubhavaḥ pravartate tadā kiṃ vāsanānimitta uta nirnimitta iti śaṅkāṃ vyapanetumāha —
tāsāṃ vāsanānāmanāditvam | na vidyata ādiryasya tasya bhāvastattvaṃ tāsāmādirnāstītyarthaḥ | kuta iti | āśiṣo nityatvāt | yeyamāśīrmahāmoharūpā sadaiva sukhasādhanāni me bhūyāsurmā kadācana tairme viyogo bhūditi yaḥ saṃkalpaviśeṣo vāsanānāṃ kāraṇaṃ tasya nityatvādanāditvamityarthaḥ | etaduktaṃ bhavati — kāraṇasya sannihitatvādanubhavasaṃskārādīnāṃ kāryāṇāṃ pravṛttiḥ kena vāryate | anubhavasaṃskārānubiddhaṃ saṃkocavikāśadharmi cittaṃ tattadabhivyañjakavipākalābhāt tattatphalarūpatayā pariṇamata ityarthaḥ || 10 ||

tāsāmānantyāddhānaṃ kathaṃ bhavatītyāśaṅkya hānopāyamāha —
vāsanānāmanantarānubhavo hetustasyāpyanubhavasya rāgādayasteṣāmavidyeti sākṣāt pāramparyeṇa hetuḥ | phalaṃ śarīrādi smṛtyādi ca | āśrayo buddhisattvam | ālambanaṃ yadevānubhavasya tadeva vāsanānām | atastairhetuphalāśrayālambanairanantānāmapi vāsanānāṃ saṃgṛhītatvāt | eṣāṃ hetvādīnāmabhāve jñānayogābhyāṃ dagdhabījakalpatve vihite nirmūlatvānna vāsanāḥ prarohanti na kāryamārabhanta iti tāsāmabhāvaḥ || 11 ||

nanu pratikṣaṇaṃ cittasya naśvaratvopalabdhervāsanānāṃ tatphalānāṃ ca kāryakāraṇabhāvena yugapadabhāvitvādbhede kathamekatvamityāśaṅkyaikatvasamarthanāyāha —
ihātyantamasatāṃ bhāvānāmutpattirna yuktimatī teṣāṃ sattvasambandhāyogāt | na hi śaśaviṣāṇādīnāṃ kvacidapi sattvasambandho dṛṣṭaḥ | nirupākhye ca kārye kimuddiśya kāraṇāni pravarteran | na hyasantaṃ viṣayamālocya kaścit pravartate | satāmapi virodhānnābhāvasambandho'sti | yat svarūpaṃ labdhasattākaṃ tat kathaṃ nirupākhyatāmabhāvarūpatāṃ vā bhajate na viruddhaṃ rūpaṃ svīkarotītyarthaḥ | tasmāt satāmabhāvāsambhavādasatāṃ cotpattyasambhavāt taistairdharmairvipariṇamamāno dharmī sadaikarūpa evāvatiṣṭhate | dharmāstu tryadhvakatvena [ pā0 adhikatvena ] traikālikatvena tatra vyavasthitāḥ svasmin svasminnadhvani vyavasthitāḥ na svarūpaṃ tyajanti | vartamāne'dhvani vyavasthitāḥ kevalaṃ bhogyatāṃ bhajante | tasmāddharmāṇāmevātītānāgatādyadhvabhedāt tenaiva rūpeṇa kāryakāraṇabhāvo'smin darśane pratipadyate | tasmādapavargaparyantamekameva cittaṃ dharmitayā'nuvartamānaṃ na nihnotuṃ pāryate || 12 ||

ta ete dharmadharmiṇaḥ kiṃrūpā ityāha —
ya ete dharmadharmiṇaḥ proktāste vyaktasūkṣmabhedena vyavasthitāḥ guṇāḥ sattvarajastamorūpāstadātmānastatsvabhāvāstatpariṇāmarūpā ityarthaḥ | yataḥ sattvarajastamobhiḥ sukhaduḥkhamoharūpaiḥ sarvāsāṃ bāhyābhyantarabhedabhinnānāṃ bhāvavyaktīnāmanvayānugamo dṛśyate | yadyadanvayi tattat pariṇāmarūpaṃ dṛṣṭam | yathā ghaṭādayo mṛdanvitā mṛtpariṇāmarūpāḥ || 13 ||

yadyete trayo guṇāḥ sarvatra mūlakāraṇaṃ kathameko dharmīti vyapadeśa ityāśaṅkyāha —
yadyapi trayo guṇāstathāpi teṣāmaṅgāṅgibhāvagamanalakṣaṇo yaḥ pariṇāmaḥ kvacit sattvamaṅgi kvacidrajaḥ kvacicca tama ityevaṃrūpastasyaikatvādvastunastattvamekamucyate | yathā — iyaṃ pṛthivī | ayaṃ vāyurityevamādi || 14 ||

nanu jñānavyatirikte satyarthe vastvekamanekaṃ vā vaktuṃ yujyate | yadā ca vijñānameva vāsanāvaśāt kāryakāraṇabhāvenāvasthitaṃ tathā tathā pratibhāti tadā kathametacchakyate vaktumityāśaṅkyāha —
tayorjñānārthayorviviktaḥ panthā vivikto mārgo deśa iti yāvat | katham | vastusāmye cittabhedāt | samāne vastuni stryādāvupalabhyamāne nānāpramātṝṇāṃ cittasya bhedaḥ sukhaduḥkhamoharūpatayā samupalabhyate | tathāhi ekasyāṃ rūpalāvaṇyavatyāṃ yoṣiti upalabhyamānāyāṃ sarāgasya sukhamutpadyate sapatnyāstu dveṣaḥ parivrājakāderghṛṇetyekasmin vastuni nānāvidhacittodayāt kathaṃ cittakāryatvaṃ vastuna ekacittakāryatve vastvekarūpatayaivā'vabhāseta | kiñca cittakāryatve vastuno yadīyasya cittasya tadvastu kāryaṃ tasminnarthāntaravyāsakte tadvastu na kiñcit syāt | bhavatviti cenna | tadeva kathamanyairbahubhirupalabhyeta | upalabhyate ca tasmānna cittakāryam | atha yugapadbahubhiḥ so'rthaḥ kriyate tadā bahunirmitasyārthasyaikanirmitādvailakṣaṇyaṃ syāt | yadā tu vailakṣaṇyaṃ neṣyate tadā kāraṇabhede sati kāryabhedasyābhāve nirhetukamekarūpaṃ vā jagat syāt | etaduktaṃ bhavati — satyapi bhinne kāraṇe yadi kāryasyābhedastadā samagraṃ jagannānāvidhakāraṇajanyamekarūpaṃ syāt | kāraṇabhedānanugamāt svātantryeṇa nirhetukaṃ vā syāt | yadyevaṃ kathaṃ tena triguṇātmanā cittenaikasyaiva pramātuḥ sukhaduḥkhamohamayāni jñānāni janyante [pā0 kathaṃ tena triguṇātmanā'rthe naikasyaiva pramātuḥ sukhaduḥkhamohabhayāni jñānāni na janyante]| maivam | yathā'rthastriguṇastathā cittamapi triguṇam | tasyārthapratibhāsotpattau dharmādayaḥ sahakārikāraṇam | tadudbhavābhibhavavaśāt kadāciccittasya tena tena rūpeṇābhivyaktiḥ | tathā ca — kāmukasya sannihitāyāṃ yoṣiti dharmasahakṛtaṃ cittaṃ sattvasyāṅgitayā pariṇamamānaṃ sukhamayaṃ bhavati | tadevā'dharmasahakāri rajaso'ṅgitayā duḥkharūpaṃ sapatnīmātrasya bhavati | tīvrādharmasahakāritayā pariṇamamānaṃ tamaso'ṅgitvena kopanāyāḥ sapatnyā mohamayaṃ bhavati | tasmādvijñānavyatirekeṇāsti grāhyārthaḥ [pā0 grāhyo'rthaḥ]| tadevaṃ vijñānārthayostādātmyavirodhānna kāryakāraṇabhāvaḥ | kāraṇābhede satyapi kāryabhedaprasaṅgāditi jñānādvyatiriktatvamarthasya vyavasthitam || 15 ||

yadyevaṃ jñānaṃ cet prakāśakatvādgrahaṇasvabhāvamarthaśca prakāśyatvādgrāhyasvabhāvastadā yugapat sarvānarthān kathaṃ na gṛhṇāti | na smarati cetyāśaṅkāṃ parihartumāha —
tasyārthasyoparāgādākārasamarpaṇāccitte bāhyaṃ vastu jñātamajñātaṃ ca bhavati | ayamarthaḥ — sarvaḥ padārtha ātmalābhe cittaṃ sāmagrīmapekṣate | nīlādijñānaṃ copajāyamānamindriyapraṇālikayā samāgatamarthoparāgaṃ sahakārikāraṇatvenāpekṣate | vyatiriktasyārthasya sambandhābhāvādgrahītumaśakyatvāt | tataśca yenaivārthenāsya svarūpoparāgaḥ kṛtastamevārthaṃ tajjñānaṃ vyavahārayogyatāṃ nayati | tataḥ so'rtho jñāta ucyate | yena cā''kāro na samarpitaḥ sa na jñātatvena vyavahriyate | yasmiṃścānubhūte'rthe sādṛśyādirarthaḥ saṃskāramudbodhayan sahakāritāṃ pratipadyate tasminnevārthe smṛtirupajāyata iti na sarvatra jñānaṃ nāpi smṛtiriti na kaścidvirodhaḥ || 16 ||

yadyevaṃ pramātāpi puruṣo yasmin kāle nīlaṃ vedayate na tasmin kāle pītādimataścittasattvasyāpi kadācit grahītṛrūpatvādākāragrahaṇe pariṇāmitvaṃ prāptamityāśaṅkāṃ parihartumāha —
yā etāścittasya pramāṇaviparyayādirūpā vṛttayaḥ, tāstatprabhościttasya grahītuḥ puruṣasya sadā sarvakālameva jñātāḥ [pā0 ġyeyāḥ]| tasya cidrūpatayā'pariṇāmitvāt pariṇāmitvābhāvādityarthaḥ | yadyasau pariṇāmī syāt tadā pariṇāmasya kādācitkatvāt tāsāṃ cittavṛttīnāṃ sadā jñātatvaṃ nopapadyeta | ayamarthaḥ — puruṣasya cidrūpasya sadaivādhiṣṭhātṛtvena vyavasthitasya yadantaraṅgaṃ nirmalaṃ sattvam tasyāpi sadaivāvasthitatvādyenārthenoparaktaṃ bhavati tathāvidhasyārthasya sadaiva cicchāyāsaṃkrāntisadbhāvastasyāṃ satyāṃ siddhaṃ jñātṛtvamiti na kadācit kācit pariṇāmitvāśaṅkā || 17 ||

nanu cittameva yadi sattvotkarṣāt prakāśakam tadā svaparaprakāśarūpatvādātmānamarthaṃ ca prakāśayatīti tāvataiva vyavahārasamāptiḥ | kiṃ grahītrantareṇetyāśaṅkāmapanetumāha —
taccittaṃ svābhāsaṃ svaprakāśakaṃ na bhavati puruṣavedyaṃ bhavatīti yāvat | kutaḥ | dṛśyatvāt | yat kila dṛśyaṃ tat draṣṭṛvedyaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ yathā ghaṭādi | dṛśyaṃ ca cittaṃ tasmānna svābhāsam || 18 ||

nanu sādhyāviśiṣṭo'yaṃ hetuḥ | dṛśyatvameva cittasyāsiddham | kiñca svabuddhisaṃvedanadvāreṇa hitāhitaprāptiparihārarūpā vṛttayo dṛśyante | tathāhi — kruddho'haṃ bhīto'hamatra me rāga ityevamādyā saṃvit buddherasaṃvedane nopapadyata ityāśaṅkāmapanetumāha —
arthasya saṃvittiridantayā vyavahārayogyatāpādanam | ayamarthaḥ sukhaheturduḥkhaheturveti | buddheḥ saṃvidahamityevamākāreṇa sukhaduḥkharūpatayā vyavahārakṣamatāpādanam | evaṃvidhaṃ ca vyāpāradvayamarthapratyakṣakāle na yugapat kartuṃ śakyaṃ virodhāt | na hi viruddhayorvyāpārayoryugapat sambhavo'sti | ata ekasmin kāla ubhayasya svarūpasyā'rthasya cāvadhārayitumaśakyatvānna cittaṃ svaprakāśakaṃ bhavati | kintu evaṃvidhavyāpāradvayaniṣpādyasya phaladvayasyāsaṃvedanādbahirmukhatayaiva svaniṣṭhatvena cittasya svayaṃ vedanādarthaniṣṭhameva phalaṃ na svaniṣṭhamityarthaḥ || 19 ||

nanu mā bhūdbuddheḥ svayaṃ grahaṇaṃ buddhyantareṇa bhaviṣyatītyāśaṅkyāha —
yadi hi buddhirbuddhyantareṇa vedyate sā'pi buddhiḥ svayamabuddhā buddhyantaraṃ prakāśayitumasamartheti tasyā grāhakaṃ [ pā0 bodhakam ] buddhyantaraṃ kalpanīyaṃ tasyā'pyanyadityanavasthānāt puruṣāntareṇārthapratītirna syāt | na hi pratītavapratītāyāmarthaḥ pratīto bhavati | smṛtisaṃkaraśca prāpnoti — rūpe rase vā samutpannāyāṃ buddhau tadgrāhikāṇāmanantānāṃ buddhīnāṃ samutpatterbuddhijanitaiḥ saṃskārairyadā yugapadbahvayaḥ smṛtayaḥ kriyante tadā buddheraparyavasānādbuddhismṛtīnāṃ ca bahvīnāṃ yugapadutpatteḥ kasminnarthe smṛtiriyamutpanneti jñātumaśkyatvāt smṛtīnāṃ saṃkaraḥ syāt | iyaṃ rūpe smṛtiriyaṃ rase smṛtiriti na jñāyeta || 20 ||

nanu buddheḥ svaprakāśatvābhāve buddhyantare cāsaṃvedane kathamayaṃ viṣayasaṃvedanarūpo vyavahāra ityāśaṅkya svasiddhāntamāha —
puruṣaścidrūpatvāccitiḥ sā'pratisaṃkramā | na vidyate pratisakramo'nyatra gamanaṃ yasyāḥ sā tathoktā | anyenāsaṅkīrṇeti yāvat | yathā guṇā aṅgāṅgibhāvalakṣaṇe pariṇāme aṅginaṃ guṇaṃ saṃkrāmanti tadrūpatāmivā''padyante | yathā vā loke paramāṇavaḥ prasaranto viṣayamārūpayanti [ pā0 āropayanti ] naivaṃ citiśaktistasyāḥ sarvadaikarūpatayā supratiṣṭhitatvena vyavasthitatvāt | atastatsannidhāne yadā buddhistadākāratāmāpadyate cetanevopajāyate [ pā0 cetanopajāyate ] buddhivṛttipratisakrāntā ca yadā cicchaktirbuddhivṛttiviśiṣṭatayā saṃvedyate [pā0 buddhivṛttyāveśāttathā saṃpadyate] tadā buddheḥ svasyā ātmano vedanaṃ saṃvedanaṃ bhavatītyarthaḥ || 21 ||

itthaṃ svasaṃviditaṃ cittaṃ sarvānugrahaṇasāmarthyena sakalavyavahāranirvāhakṣamaṃ bhaviṣyatītyāha —
draṣṭā puruṣastenoparaktaṃ tatsannidhānena tadrūpatāmiva prāpnoti dṛśyoparaktaṃ viṣayoparaktaṃ gṛhītaviṣayākārapariṇāmaṃ yadā bhavati tadā tadeva cittaṃ sarvārthagrahaṇasamarthaṃ bhavati | yathā nirmalaṃ sphaṭikadarpaṇādyeva pratibimbagrahaṇasamartham | evaṃ rajastamobhyāmanabhibhūtaṃ sattvaṃ śuddhatvāccicchāyāgrahaṇasamarthaṃ bhavati | na punaraśuddhatvādrajastamasī | tannyagbhūtarajastamorūpamaṅgitayā sattvaṃ niścalapradīpaśikhākāraṃ sadaikarūpatayā pariṇamamānaṃ cicchāyāgrahaṇasāmarthyādāmokṣaprāpteravatiṣṭhate | yathā'yaskāntasannidhāne lohasya calanamāvirbhavatyevaṃ cidrūpapuruṣasannidhāne sattvasyābhivyaṅgyamabhivyajyate caitanyam | ata evāsmindarśane dve cicchaktī — nityoditā'bhivyaṅgyā ca | nityoditā cicchaktiḥ puruṣasannidhānādabhivyaktamabhivyaṅgyacaitanyaṃ sattvam | abhivyaṅgyā cicchaktistadatyantasannihitatvādantaraṅgaṃ puruṣasya bhogyatāṃ pratipadyate | tadeva śāntabrahmavādibhiḥ sāṃkhyaiḥ puruṣasya paramātmano'dhiṣṭheyaṃ karmānurūpaṃ sukhaduḥkhabhoktṛtayā vyapadiśyate | yattvanudriktatvādekasyāpi guṇasya kadācit kasyacidaṅgitvāt triguṇaṃ pratikṣaṇaṃ pariṇamamānaṃ sukhaduḥkhamohātmakamanirmalaṃ tattasmin karmānurūpe śuddhe sattve svākārasamarpaṇadvāreṇa saṃvedyatāmāpādayati tacchuddhamādyaṃ cittasattvameveti pratisaṅkrāntacicchāyamanyato gṛhītaviṣayākāreṇa cittenopaḍhaukitamākāraṃ citsaṅkrāntibalāt cetanāyamānaṃ vāstavacaitanyābhāve'pi sukhaduḥkhasvarūpaṃ bhogamanubhavati | sa evaṃ bhogo'tyantasannidhānena vivekāgrahaṇādabhokturapi puruṣasya bhoga iti vyapadiṣyate | anenaivābhiprāyeṇa vindhyavāsinoktam — sattvatapyatvameva puruṣatapyatvamiti | anyatrāpi — pratibimbe pratibimbamānacchāyāsadṛśacchāyodbhavaḥ pratibimbaśabdenocyate | evaṃ sattve'pi pauruṣeyacicchāyāsadṛśacidabhivyaktiḥ pratisaṅkrāntiśavdārtha iti | nanu pratibimbaṃ nāma nirmalasya niyatapariṇāmasya nirmale dṛṣṭam | yathā mukhasya darpaṇe | atyantanirmalasya vyāpakasyāpariṇāminaḥ puruṣasya tasmādatyantanirmalāt puruṣādanirmale sattve kathaṃ pratibimbanamupapadyate | ucyate — pratibimbanasya svarūpamanavagacchatā bhavatedamabhyadhāyi | yaiva sattvagatāyā abhivyaṅgyāyāścicchakteḥ puruṣasya sānnidhyādabhivyaktiḥ saiva pratibimbanamucyate | yādṛśī puruṣagatā cicchaktistacchāyāpyatrāvirbhavati | yadapyuktamatyantanirmalaḥ puruṣaḥ kathamanirmale sattve pratisaṃkrāmatīti tadapyanaikāntikam | nairmalyādapakṛṣṭe'pi jalādāvādityādayaḥ pratisaṃkrāntāḥ samupalabhyante | yadapyuktamanavacchinnasya nāsti pratisaṃkrāntiriti tadapyayuktaṃ vyāpakasyāpyākāśasya darpanādau pratisaṃkrāntidarśanāt | evaṃ sati na kācidanupapattiḥ pratibimbadarśanasya | nanu sāttvikapariṇāmarūpe buddhisattve puruṣasannidhānādabhivyaṅgyāyāścicchakterbāhyākārasaṃkrāntau puruṣasya sukhaduḥkharūpo bhoga ityuktam tadanupapannam | tadeva cittasattvaṃ prakṛtāvapariṇatāyāṃ kathaṃ sambhavati kimarthaśca tasyāḥ pariṇāmaḥ | athocyeta puruṣasyārthopabhogasampādanaṃ tayā kartavyam | ataḥ puruṣārthakartavyatayā'syā yukta eva pariṇāmaḥ | taccānupapannam | puruṣārthakartavyatāyā evānupapatteḥ | puruṣārtho mayā kartavya evaṃvidho'dhyavasāyaḥ puruṣārthakartavyatocyate | jaḍāyāśca prakṛteḥ kathaṃ prathamamevaṃvidho'dhyavasāyaḥ | asti cedadhyavasāyaḥ kathaṃ jaḍatvam | atrocyate — anulomapratilomalakṣaṇapariṇāmadvaye sahajaṃ śaktidvayamasti | tadeva puruṣārthakartavyatocyate | sā ca śaktiracetanāyā api prakṛteḥ sahajaiva | tatra mahadādimahābhūtaparyanto'syā bahirmukhatayā'nulomaḥ pariṇāmaḥ | punaḥ svakāraṇānupraveśanadvāreṇāsmitā'ntaḥ pariṇāmaḥ pratilomaḥ | itthaṃ puruṣasya bhogaparisamāpteḥ [pā0 ā bhogaparisamapteḥ] sahajaśaktidvayakṣayāt kṛtārthā prakṛtirna punaḥ pariṇāmamārabhate | evaṃvidhāyāṃ ca puruṣārthakartavyatāyāṃ jaḍāyā api prakṛterna kācidanupapattiḥ | nanu yadīdṛśī śaktiḥ sahajaiva pradhānasyāsti tat kimarthaṃ mokṣārthibhirmokṣāya yatnaḥ kriyate | mokṣasya cānarthanīyatve tadupadeśakaśāstrasyānarthakyaṃ syāt | ucyate — yo'yaṃ prakṛtipuruṣayoranādirbhogyabhoktṛtvalakṣaṇaḥ [pā0 bhoktṛbhābalakṣaṇaḥ] sambandhastasmin sati vyaktacetanāyāḥ prakṛteḥ kartṛtvābhimānādduḥkhānubhave sati kathamiyaṃ duḥkhanivṛttirātyantikī mama syāditi bhavatyevādhyavasāyaḥ | ato duḥkhanivṛttyupāyopadeśakaśāstropadeśāpekṣā'styeva pradhānasya | tathābhūtameva karmānurūpaṃ buddhisattvaṃ śāstropadeśasya viṣayaḥ | darśanāntareṣvapyevaṃvidha evāvidyāsvabhāvaḥ śāstre'dhikriyate [ abhidhīyate ]| sa ca mokṣāya prayatamāna evaṃvidhaśāstropadeśaṃ sahakāriṇamapekṣya mokṣākhyaṃ phalamāsādayati | sarvāṇyeva kāryāṇi prāptāyāṃ sāmagryāmātmānaṃ labhante | asya pratilomapariṇāmadvāreṇaivotpādyasya mokṣākhyasya kāryasyedṛśyeva sāmagrī pramāṇena niścitā prakārāntareṇānupapatteḥ | atastāṃ vinā kathaṃ bhavitumarhati | ataḥ sthitametat — saṃkrāntaviṣayoparāgamabhivyaktacicchāyaṃ buddhisattvaṃ viṣayaniścayadvāreṇa samagrāṃ lokayātrāṃ nirvāhayatīti | evaṃvidhameva cittaṃ paśyanto bhrāntāḥ svasaṃvedanaṃ cittaṃ cittamātraṃ ca jagadityevaṃ bruvāṇāḥ pratibodhitā bhavanti || 22 ||

nanu yadyevaṃvidhādeva cittāt sakalavyavahāraniṣpattiḥ kathaṃ pramāṇaśūnyo draṣṭā'bhyupagamyata ityāśaṅkya draṣṭuḥ pramāṇamāha —
tadeva cittaṃ saṃkhyātumaśakyābhirvāsanābhiścitramapi nānārūpamapi parārthaṃ parasya svāmino bhokturbhogāpavargalakṣaṇamarthaṃ sādhayatīti | kutaḥ | saṃhatyakāritvāt saṃhatya sambhūya militvā'rthakriyākāritvāt | yacca saṃhatyārthakriyākāri tat parārthaṃ dṛṣṭam | yathā śayanāsanādi | sattvarajastamāṃsi ca cittalakṣaṇapariṇāmabhāñji saṃhatyakārīṇi caātaḥ parārthāni | yaḥ paraḥ sa puruṣaḥ | nanu yādṛśena śayanāsanādīnāṃ pareṇa śarīravatā pārārthyamupalabdhaṃ taddṛṣṭāntabalena tādṛśa eva paraḥ sidhyati | yādṛśaśca bhavatāṃ paro'saṃhatarūpo'bhipretastadviparītasya siddherayamiṣṭavighātakṛddhetuḥ | ucyate — yadyapi sāmānyena parārthamātre vyāptirgṛhītā tathā'pi sattvādivilakṣaṇadharmiparyālocanayā tadvilakṣaṇa eva bhoktā paraḥ sidhyati | yathā candanāvṛte śikhariṇi vilakṣaṇāddhūmādvahniranumīyamāna itaravahnivilakṣaṇaścandanaprabhava eva pratīyate | evamihāpi vilakṣaṇasya sattvākhyasya bhogyasya parārthatve'numīyamāne tathāvidha eva bhoktā'dhiṣṭhātā paraścinmātrarūpo'saṃhataḥ sidhyati | yadi ca tasya paratvaṃ sarvotkṛṣṭatvamevaṃ pratīyate tathāpi tāmasebhyo viṣayebhyaḥ prakṛṣyate śarīraṃ prakāśarūpendriyāśrayatvāt | tasmādapi prakṛṣyante indriyāṇi | tato'pi prakṛṣṭaṃ sattvaṃ prakāśarūpam | tasyāpi yaḥ prakāśakaḥ prakāśyavilakṣaṇaḥ sa cidrūpa eva [pā0 iva] bhavatīti kutastasya saṃhatatvam || 23 ||

idānīṃ śāstraphalaṃ kaivalyaṃ nirṇetuṃ daśabhiḥ sūtrairupakramate —
evaṃ sattvapuruṣayoranyatve sādhite yastayorviśeṣaṃ paśyati — ayamasmādanya ityevaṃrūpam — tasya vijñātacittarūpasattvasya citte yā''tmabhāvabhāvanā sā nivartate | cittameva kartṛ jñātṛ bhoktrityabhimāno nivartate || 24 ||

tasmin sati kiṃ bhavatītyāha —
yadasyājñānanimnapathaṃ bahirmukhaṃ viṣayopabhogaphalaṃ cittamāsīttadidānīṃ vivekanimnaṃ vivekamārgamantarmukhaṃ kaivalyaprāgbhāraṃ kaivalyaprārambhaṃ sampadyata iti || 25 ||

asmiṃśca vivekavāhini citte ye'ntarāyāḥ prādurbhavantiteṣāṃ hetupratipādanadvāreṇa tyāgopāyamāha —
tasmin samādhau sthitasya chidreṣvantarāyeṣu yāni pratyayāntarāṇi vyutthānarūpāṇi jñānāni prāgbhūtebhyaḥ vyutthānānubhavajebhyaḥ saṃskārebhyo'haṃ mametyevaṃrūpāṇi kṣīyamāṇebhyo'pi prādurbhavanti | antaḥkaraṇocchittidvāreṇa teṣāṃ hānaṃ kartavyamityuktaṃ bhavati || 26 ||

hānopāyaśca pūrvamevokta ityāha —
yathā kleśānāmavidyādīnāṃ hānaṃ pūrvamuktam (2|10--11) tathā saṃskārāṇāmapi kartavyam | yathā te jñānāgninā pluṣṭā dagdhabījakalpā na punaścittabhūmau prarohaṃ labhante tathā saṃskārā api || 27 ||

evaṃ ca pratyayāntarāntarānudaye sthirībhūte samādhau yādṛśasya yoginaḥ samādheḥ prakarṣaprāptirbhavati tathāvidhamupāyamāha —
prasaṃkhyānaṃ yāvatāṃ tattvānāṃ yathākramaṃ vyavasthitānāṃ parasparavilakṣaṇasvarūpavibhāvanam | tasmin satyapyakusīdasya phalamalipsoḥ pratyayāntarāṇāmanudaye sarvaprakāravivekakhyāteḥ pariśeṣāddharmameghaḥ samādhirbhavati | prakṛṣṭamaśuklakṛṣṇaṃ dharmaṃ paramapuruṣārthasādhakaṃ mehati siñcatīti dharmameghaḥ | anena prakṛṣṭadharmasyaiva jñānahetutvamityupapāditaṃ bhavati || 28 ||

tasmāddharmameghāt kiṃ bhavatītyāha —
kleśānāmavidyādīnāmabhiniveśāntānāṃ karmaṇāṃ ca śuklādibhedena trividhānāṃ jñānodayāt pūrvapūrvakāraṇanivṛtyā nivṛttirbhavati || 29 ||

teṣu nivṛtteṣu kiṃ bhavatītyāha —
āvriyate cittamebhirityāvaraṇāni kleśāsta eva malāstebhyo'petasya tadvirahitasya jñānasya gagananibhasyānantyādanavacchedājjñeyamalpaṃ gaṇanāspadaṃ bhavati | akleśenaiva sarvaṃ jñeyaṃ jānātītyarthaḥ || 30 ||

tataḥ kimityāha —
kṛto niṣpādito bhogāpavargalakṣaṇaḥ puruṣārthaḥ prayojanaṃ yaiste kṛtārthāḥ | guṇāḥ sattvarajastamāṃsi | teṣāṃ pariṇāma āpuruṣārthasamāpterānulomyena prātilomyenāṅgāṅgibhāvaḥ sthitilakṣaṇaḥ | tasya yo'sau kramo vakṣyamāṇastasya parisamāptirniṣṭhā | na punarudbhava ityarthaḥ || 31 ||

kramasyoktasya lakṣaṇamāha —
kṣaṇo'lpīyān kālastasya yo'sau pratiyogī kṣaṇavilakṣaṇaḥ pariṇāmāparāntanirgrāhyo'nubhūteṣu kṣaṇeṣu paścāt saṃkalanabuddhyaiva yo gṛhyate sa kṣaṇānāṃ krama ucyate | na hyananubhūteṣu kramaḥ parijñātuṃ śakyaḥ || 32 ||

idānīṃ phalabhūtasya kaivalyasyāsādhāraṇasvarūpamāha —
samāptabhogāpavargalakṣaṇapuruṣārthānāṃ guṇānāṃ yaḥ pratiprasavaḥ pratilomasya pariṇāmasya samāptau vikārānudbhavo yadi va citiśaktervṛttisārūpyanivṛttau svarūpamātre'vasthānaṃ tat kaivalyamucyate || 33 ||



tadevaṃ siddhyantarebhyo vilakṣaṇāṃ sarvasiddhimūlabhūtāṃ samādhisiddhimabhidhāya jātyantarapariṇāmalakṣaṇasya ca siddhiviśeṣasya prakṛtyāpūraṇameva kāraṇamityupapādya dharmādīnāṃ pratibandhakanivṛttamātre eva sāmarthyamiti pradarśya nirmāṇacittānāmasmitāmātrādudbhava ityuktvā teṣāṃ ca yogicittamevādhiṣṭhāpakamiti pradarśya yogicittasya cittāntaravailakṣaṇyamabhidhāya tatkarmaṇāmalaukikatvaṃ copapādya vipākānuguṇānāṃ vāsanānāmabhivyaktisāmarthyaṃ kāryakāraṇayoścaikyapratipādanena vyavahitānāmapi vāsanānāmānantaryamupapādya tāsāmānantye'pi hetuphalādidvāreṇa hānamupadarśya atītādiṣvadhvasu dharmāṇāṃ sadbhāvamupapādya vijñānavādaṃ nirākṛtya sākāravādaṃ ca pratiṣṭhāpya puruṣasya jñātṛtvamuktvā cittadvāreṇa sakalavyavahāraniṣpattimupapādya puruṣasattve pramāṇamupadarśya kaivalyanirṇayāya daśabhiḥ sūtraiḥ krameṇopayogino'rthānabhidhāya śāstrāntare'pyetadeva kaivalyamityupapādya kaivalyasvarūpaṃ nirṇītamiti vyākṛtaḥ kaivalyapādaḥ |
